Chapter 6: Shadows and Sidelines

1142 Words
Rain tapped lightly against the tinted windows of the Voss family limo, creating a rhythmic lullaby that couldn’t soothe the chaos in Eliana’s mind. The city lights blurred past, and all she could see was her father’s cold eyes from earlier that night, the way his smile didn’t reach them when he said, “We need to talk.” She hadn’t slept. After the gala ended, Victor had brushed her off with a vague comment about “stress” and “club pressure.” But Eliana wasn’t a child anymore. She knew what fear looked like in a man who never feared anything. Now, she sat beside him in silence, on the way to a pre-match meeting at the training grounds. The Zenith Strikers were due to face off against the league’s third-ranked team in just two days, but her mind wasn’t on football. “Do you trust me?” Victor asked suddenly, his voice softer than expected. Eliana turned slowly. “That depends. Are you fixing matches?” The limo stilled at a red light, but the question made the air in the cabin drop several degrees. Victor didn’t flinch. He merely sighed, looking down at his hands. “I’m trying to protect what we built,” he said finally. “That’s not a no,” Eliana whispered, her chest tightening. Victor looked out the window. “We’ll talk later. Focus on the match.” She wanted to scream. But she swallowed it, burying the rage beneath layers of poise. The club needed her. The players needed her. And—God help her—Charlie needed her, even if he didn’t know it yet. --- The training grounds buzzed with controlled chaos. Coaches barked drills. Balls flew. Sweat glistened. Charlie Kane stood at the center of it all, shirt damp and clinging to his torso, legs pumping as he dribbled past defenders with surgical precision. Eliana arrived at the sideline just in time to catch him vault over a sliding tackle and score with a vicious strike that curved past the keeper. The net rippled. Cheers erupted. And Charlie, grinning, turned toward her—like he knew she was watching. “Show-off,” Lila muttered, appearing beside her with a protein shake in hand. Eliana didn’t answer. Her eyes were locked on Charlie. There was something different about him today. Sharper. More focused. Like he was trying to outrun something. Lila leaned in. “Word is Damien Holt was sniffing around the player lounge this morning. Asked for Charlie. Got denied entry, but... he left a message.” Eliana’s pulse jumped. “What kind of message?” “A black envelope. No name. Just a card inside with the word ‘Soon.’” Eliana’s stomach sank. “Did Charlie see it?” Lila nodded. “He laughed. Tossed it in the bin. But... I think he’s scared. He just hides it better than most.” Eliana didn’t realize she was walking until she was halfway across the field, cutting through drills and ignoring startled glances. Charlie saw her coming and met her halfway, toweling sweat from his brow. “You just gonna keep storming into my workouts every day?” he said with a grin. She didn’t smile. “We need to talk.” Charlie’s smirk faded. “Let me guess. About Holt?” “And about the fact that you're clearly dodging something big.” Charlie sighed, running a hand through his damp hair. “Look, Eliana—” “Don’t lie to me. Not now.” Her voice was sharp. Desperate. “I saw the way you reacted to him at the gala. And I know Holt doesn’t threaten people for fun.” He looked around. Players were watching. Too many ears. Too much risk. “Not here,” he said. “Meet me tonight. 11:00. Park behind the old stadium. I’ll tell you everything.” Before she could reply, he jogged back toward the team, leaving her with nothing but questions and the weight of her own secrets. --- The stadium after hours was a ghost town, empty and echoing with memories. Eliana stood beneath a flickering floodlight, her coat wrapped tight around her. The old stadium had once housed legends. Now, it held ghosts. Charlie arrived minutes later, hood up, his posture tense. “This place feels cursed,” he said quietly. “Maybe it is,” she replied. “Start talking.” He leaned against the rusting fence, silent for a moment before speaking. “Three years ago, I took a bribe to lose a match in Spain,” he began. “Lower division, barely televised. I was broke. Injured. No clubs were calling. And someone made me an offer. Easy money, they said. Just miss a penalty.” Eliana’s breath caught. Charlie looked her in the eye. “I didn’t miss. I couldn’t. But just by talking to them... I became property. They owned my silence. And Damien? He’s one of them. A collector.” She stepped back, unsure whether to scream or cry. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” “Because I was trying to outrun it. I thought signing for your dad’s club was a new beginning. I didn’t know Holt was watching.” Eliana’s hands trembled. “You brought danger into my club.” “I know,” he said, voice low. “But I swear to you—I’m not that man anymore. I came here to play clean. To be better.” A silence fell between them, thick with tension. Then: “You need to leave,” she said, voice hollow. Charlie’s face twisted. “What?” “You’re a risk to everything I’ve built.” His eyes searched hers, hurt flashing. “So that’s it? One mistake—and I’m just trash to toss?” “It’s not about the mistake. It’s about the target on your back.” Her tone softened. “I don’t hate you, Charlie. But I can’t protect you. Not from this.” He took a step closer. “I don’t need protection. I need a chance.” “You already had one,” she whispered. As Charlie turned to leave, headlights flashed from the road. A black SUV crawled to a stop near the old gates. The window lowered—just enough for a cigarette tip to glow. Damien Holt sat inside, watching. Charlie tensed, but Eliana stepped forward, her eyes burning. “You came to threaten him?” she called out. Holt’s voice was calm. Amused. “No, Ms. Voss. I came to remind you... not everyone plays fair. Your father taught me that.” The SUV pulled away into the dark, tires hissing against the wet pavement. Eliana stood frozen. Charlie whispered, “What did he mean about your father?” Eliana didn’t answer. Because she didn’t know. Not anymore.
