As Daniel negotiated the dark, narrow alleyways, the distant sounds of gunshots still resounded in his ears. His thoughts ran. Emily's terrified look slashed across him like a dagger, but he couldn't let himself waver. Not just now. Not when everything hung on a knife-edge. His foes had drawn first blood; he knew they wouldn't stop until they got what they wanted—or until one of them died. Daniel's mind strayed to the idea developing in it as they raced. Though he had few choices, it was dangerous—reckless even. Should they continue fleeing, Emily would pay for his transgressions and finally be captured. He couldn't permit that to occur. He had to stop this once and for once permanently. And, regardless of the cost, the only way to do that was to bring the battle right to his adversaries
