When the door closed behind them, Emily and Daniel were plunged into darkness. The only sound of their rapid hurrying breaths as they leaned against the wall, their hearts pounding, was almost deafening—the sudden silence. Emily screwed up her eyes and tried to focus on what was around her. The dim light filtering through the wall illuminated the motes of dust dancing in the air. "Are we safe?" she said, terror tumbling into her voice. "For now," Daniel said, his voice hard and doubtful. He walked warily towards a small window at the far end of the room, staring out into the darkened alleyway beyond. Still, we have to decide what to do going forward. With the pulsation of her heart, Emily followed him and considered the dark outside. Daniel, they are still out there. We cannot sit here
