chapter 7

They found evidence that you are carrying the king’s child. The room tilted slightly. “No…” I whispered again, weaker this time. Lina grabbed my hands tightly, shaking. “My lady, they took a healer’s report from the palace clinic. Blood tests, scent confirmation, they are saying you are already bonded in a deeper way than you admitted.” My throat tightened. Impossible. I had felt nothing unusual yet. No symptoms. No signs. And yet, in a palace built on politics and lies, truth did not matter. Only what they could prove. Or fabricate. A sharp knock exploded against the door again! This time, louder. More aggressive. Lina’s face went pale instantly. “They are here.” Before I could respond, heavy footsteps surrounded the chamber. Armor clanked. Swords drawn. The unmistakable sound of royal enforcement. The Alpha King’s execution guards. My stomach dropped. Then a voice echoed through the corridor. “By order of the council, open the door and surrender the accused Luna!” My pulse pounded violently. Lina stepped back in fear. “My lady… what do we do?” For a brief second, I thought of Kael. Of his hands against the wall beside me. Of the way he fought himself not to touch me. Of the way his voice broke when he said, “I know.” But Kael was not here. And the council had already moved against me. I straightened slowly. Something inside me shifted. Something older than fear. Survival. I walked toward the wardrobe and pulled out a dark traveling cloak. Lina gasped. “You cannot escape! The palace is surrounded!” “I am not escaping,” I said quietly. I tied the cloak tightly around my shoulders. “I am surviving.” The door shook violently as guards began forcing it open. Splinters cracked. Time was running out. I moved quickly to the back of the chamber where a hidden window overlooked the outer gardens. A maintenance exit. Old palace architecture. Rarely guarded. Lina followed shakily. “If they catch you…” “They already decided I am guilty,” I said softly. “Staying just makes it official.” Another heavy crash. The door was breaking. I pushed the window open. Cold rain slapped against my face instantly. Thunder roared. Below, the palace walls stretched high and deadly. A drop that could kill a normal wolf. But I was not normal. Not anymore. I turned to Lina once. “You didn’t have to come back,” I said quietly. Tears filled her eyes. “You saved me once, my lady.” The door behind us finally shattered! Voices erupted inside the chamber. “Search every corner!” “She cannot leave the Eastern Wing!” I stepped onto the ledge. The wind howled around me. For a split second, my thoughts flickered back to Kael again. Would he come for me? Or would he believe the council’s lie? I didn’t have time to answer that question. I jumped! The impact was brutal. Pain shot through my legs as I rolled into wet grass beneath the palace walls. Rain blurred everything. But I forced myself up immediately. No hesitation. No weakness. Above me, alarm bells began ringing through the entire Northern Palace. They had discovered my escape. I ran. By the time Kael returned to the Eastern Wing, the chamber was already chaos. Guards shouting. Servants trembling. Council members gathered with grim satisfaction. The broken window told him everything before anyone spoke. Kael stopped at the center of the room. Still. Silent. Dangerous. Then his eyes landed on the shattered glass. Something in his expression changed instantly. Not anger. Not suspicion. Fear. “Where is she?” he asked quietly. No one answered. Selene stepped forward hesitantly from the shadows. “My king… the council acted in your absence. They believed she was going to flee…” Kael turned slowly toward her. The temperature in the room dropped. “What did you do?” It wasn’t a question. It was a sentence. Selene swallowed. “They had proof…” Kael moved. Fast. One second he was across the room. The next, he had her wrist in his grip. Not hard enough to break. But enough to silence the entire palace. “Do not lie to me,” he said softly. Selene trembled. For the first time, fear crossed her face. “My king… I only followed council orders…” Kael released her abruptly. Then turned away. Something dark and uncontrollable flickered through his eyes. “Seal the palace,” he ordered. His voice dropped dangerously low. “No one leaves this kingdom.” The guards bowed instantly. But Kael was already walking away. His silver eyes fixed on the storm outside. On the direction she ran. On the darkness swallowing her trail. And for the first time in his reign as Alpha King, he looked like a man who had just lost something he could never replace. “My Luna…” he whispered under his breath. Then louder: “Find her!” And the hunt began.
