Lyara's POV
The king's security guards were everywhere.
Outside my chamber.
Outside my balcony.
Outside every corridor connected to my rooms.
Lina had been warned personally not to allow me to leave my chambers.
And it was unbearable.
Honestly, it would be better to have a pierced heart than to be held hostage against one's will.
At least then I wouldn't have to deal with a heartless Alpha.
Lina kept trying to cheer me up.
"My lady, the Alpha cares about you. Even if he doesn't love you, he wants you safe."
"Hmm."
I folded my arms.
"He wants me safe so he can make my life even more miserable."
"My lady..."
"He finds joy in breaking my heart. First humiliating me, now keeping my soul from freedom."
I turned toward her.
"So tell me, Lina, what is worse than death?"
She hesitated.
"What?"
"Being put in a prison."
"My lady, you're not in a prison."
I stared at her.
"Then tell me where I am."
Silence.
"I can't speak with anyone except you."
I began counting on my fingers.
"I can't go out."
" I can't express myself freely without starting a war."
"And whenever I do, he claims I'm arrogant."
I sighed dramatically.
"So what exactly is this, Lina?"
"My lady..."
The chamber door opened.
Without warning.
Without permission.
Without even the courtesy of a knock.
The Alpha King entered.
Again.
I narrowed my eyes.
"You can't keep barging into my room unannounced."
Kael's mouth curved into a dangerous smile.
"Those are basic rules people are taught as children."
His smile widened.
"And who taught you?"
Lina immediately bowed.
Fear flashing across her face.
Then she wisely fled the room.
Coward.
The moment the door closed, Kael stepped farther inside.
"No rule binds me, my Luna."
My Luna.
What was the man up to now?
"My Luna?"
That title never ended well for me.
"No royal law forbids the Alpha from entering his Luna's chamber without notice."
He smiled lazily.
"Besides, I make the rules here."
Of course he did.
The arrogance of this man knew no limits.
He moved closer.
Far too close.
"I hope you're having a wonderful time in your chambers, my Luna."
His voice carried amusement.
"At least I don't have to fear losing you anytime soon."
Before I could answer, his fingers brushed against my hair.
My entire body stiffened.
The simple gesture felt far too intimate.
Far too dangerous.
I stood immediately.
Creating distance.
Kael only smiled.
I hated that smile.
"I think my lord has more important matters requiring his attention."
I crossed my arms.
"Or what do you think, my lord?"
His silver eyes gleamed.
"Sure."
He stepped even closer.
"What could be more important than ensuring my Luna is safe?"
The mate bond stirred.
Annoying.
Traitorous.
Unwelcome.
My pulse betrayed me anyway.
Kael noticed.
The infuriating man noticed everything.
"I'll be leaving the palace for a few days with Selene."
For some reason, my stomach tightened.
Ridiculous.
I didn't care.
Absolutely not.
"Ensure you don't miss me too much while you're staying in your chambers."
There it was again.
That teasing tone.
That smug expression.
That impossible confidence.
"I hate people disobeying my orders."
I opened my mouth.
Ready to argue.
Ready to tell him exactly what I thought of his orders.
But before I could say anything, he turned and walked away.
Still smiling.
The door closed behind him.
Silence.
Then Lina slowly reappeared.
She took one look at my face and immediately stepped back.
"My lady..."
I pointed dramatically toward the door.
"I told you."
"Told me what?"
"That man's mission in life is to kill me while keeping me alive."
Lina bit her lip.
"My lady..."
"Did you see him?"
I threw my hands into the air.
"The way he toys with me?"
Lina wisely remained silent.
I turned toward her.
"Lina."
The maid immediately looked nervous.
Never a good sign.
"You are going to help me sneak out of this chamber."
Her eyes widened.
"My lady!"
"But the Alpha—"
"Oh?"
I raised an eyebrow.
"You're more concerned about the Alpha than me?"
"No, my lady!"
She looked horrified.
"I would die for you."
I softened slightly.
"Then don't die."
I smiled sweetly.
"Just help me escape this prison."
"My lady..."
"I need fresh air."
She looked torn.
Completely torn.
I stepped closer.
"Will you help me or not?"
Lina stared at me.
Then groaned.
Which was not exactly a yes.
But it certainly wasn't a no.
And that was good enough for me.
