Chapter 23

It was thanks to Archie that her brother was in the other part of the country and she hoped he would enjoy himself so much that when he came back  the adventurous things that he had in his mind would go away and he would focus on his studies more.

Archie said evenly. “So it's just on adventure that he goes about and nothing serious?”

Amelia’s heart missed a beat. He was watching her mouth and a glint in the dark, unreadable in his eyes set her pulse to quicken.

“What else could it be Archie?” Her voice shook a little and her hands were two tightly folded, almost clenched at her sides. Deliberately she relaxed them and tried to smile, “Has someone been telling you stories about my brother about him trying to take over the Kingdom of Halland? Archie that time was over when our father died and now that the government has taken over the country no one can take it back even if Lucas wanted to and I'm sure my brother is not that greedy for power. He just wants to take care of the people in the Kingdom, where his father ruled for a long time. Don't worry he won't do anything stupid.”

Something about  Archie's answering smile a hint of ruthlessness sent a tiny shiver down her spine.

but his voice was calm and reasonable. “ Harry had heard about him creating an army of his own and he has been practicing fighting combats near the borders of Halland and Varmland and someone informed him about its authenticity.”

“OK, I see.” So he had offered the trip to her to Denmark and the holiday to Lucas so he could find out what he wanted to know?

The thought had no right to hurt her but it did so she said crisply. “Then you will be able to reassure Harry about it because I am sure you have told him about it that it's just something he likes to do and he's not planning for any war.”

Archie looked at her very closely and said. “But you are worried about it aren't you?”

Infusing her tone with a false lightness Amelia said. “ I am very irritated actually and concerned too because Lucas has been spending far too much time going out and banishing away for months and I'm worried about him that something might go wrong because there are still enemies who are outside and who have killed my father. And this time when I met lady Louise I could see that she was watching Lucas with ferocity. She killed my parents yet she has no regrets. And I just pray that she won’t try to harm him because he is my only family left.”

Hearing her voice tremble Archie felt bad for her because even he knew the importance of family as he lost his parents when he was ten in an accident and he too only had  his sister.

“Don’t worry, lady Louise can’t harm Lucas as she is watched by Harry’s men as Harry doesn’t trust his aunt,” Archie informed.

“I hope so,” Amelia said emotionally.

She smiled up to him and said. “ And don’t worry about Lucas and his friends as they won’t do anything to harm the country as they are the sons of the people who have done so much for the kingdom when my father was alive. They are only planning their future and enjoying their life. They are all young men who have a bright future ahead of them.

“Yes, you are right but don’t you know that all these young men used to be the upper classes before their parents were thrown out of their positions.”

Amelia folded her arms. “ Archie, did you invite Lucas and me out here so that you could find out more about us? If so, I am afraid it’s been a waste of your time and money. And you would have asked me about it at the wedding I would have told you everything you wouldn’t have to invite me here on a pretense.”

But Archie shamelessly said. “But then I would have missed your company.”

His words echoed in Amelia’s head and there was silence around there for a minute and Amelia could hear her heartbeat running at a faster pace.

Nervously she said. “I am sure you would have found someone else to amuse you.” As she did not want to let her guard down.

“Do you think I am that ideal?”

Before she could answer she felt the lightest touch of his hand on her shoulder. Obeying it, she turned and looked up into the handsome face which intrigued her more and more.

Excitement bumped her already heavily beating heart and suddenly her mouth went dry and she swallowed her words.

She looked at him and clenched her fists to stop herself from reaching out and touching him.
