Chapter3

Sophie's POV I stayed all day at the hospital, sad and bitter. Wondering why my life was collapsing. Then, my phone beeped. I was very reluctant to check who or what it was. But eventually I picked it up and it was an email from work. It read " loan application ends in 24 hours, pick up the form at the front desk and prepare for the interview in 2 days." "I can't go into another debt" I muttered to myself. "But how would I pay my Dad's hospital bills and our long-overdue debt" I thought. At this point, I started feeling sick again. Since It's my place of work and I've been promised a full-time job after my one-year long internship, it's probably a good idea. I got some meals for my Dad, then headed home to prepare for work tomorrow and also write an essay on what I needed the money for. I got to work and the front desk was empty. The forms had finished. "Damn" I muttered, running my fingers across my hair. "I'll attend anyway. What's the worst that could happen?" I went to my work table and I sat there, lost in thoughts of all that happened in the last 24 hours, oblivious of my environment. Nothing was fun to me anymore, but if I could get that loan and at least take my Dad out of the hospital, I'd be most glad. The next day, I dressed very nicely for the interview. I wore a red bottom shoe my Dad got for me the day I graduated and a finely sewn corporate gown that slept on my curves and I slapped a pepper red lipstick. "I hope I'm not overly dressed?" I thought. When I got to work, I felt very obvious. All eyes were on me. My colleagues couldn't even recognize me. "Sheeshss, I'm overly dressed. But I can't go back" I encouraged myself to get to the office. When I got there, there were 10 people seated all with their forms. I felt like the odd one there. But I kept my faith intact. Two ladies there started whispering and when I eavesdropped, I heard them say Michael. "Does this mean Michael is the person interviewing us? " I interrupted them. They stared at me with a scowl and continued their conversation. "I'm never getting the loan then" Just when I had decided to leave, the 10th person came out of the office, followed by another lady who I think is probably the secretary. "You're next, miss." "Can I have your form?" She asked politely. "I couldn't grab one. By the time I got there, they were all taken" I tried to explain. But she wasn't having my explanation. "Please leave miss" While we were still going back and forth with each other, about to make a scene. A heard a deep, soft baritone voice from behind the lady. "Let her in" the man said When I got in, it wasn't Michael. I had never seen this man before. He was masculine, he seemed soft and calm and undeniably handsome. I ran my eyes through his body at least to a point. If not for that stupid desk, I would have gotten a proper view of him. "Sit," he said. "Why didn't you get the form?" "I didn't know about this early enough. By the time I got the information and came here, the forms were finished. But I wrote an essay, though.' I handed him the paper. While he was reading through my essay, I stared at him without even blinking. He had these gorgeous eyelashes that were so healthy. I was jealous for a second. "You seem to be in a lot of loans already. Do you think it's a good idea to get into more?" He asked with utmost concern. "I don't have a choice. Sir" "The company promised you a full-time job uh?" "Yes sir" I responded. "You seem to be really smart." "I graduated top of my class." "Uhhh, I see." He added. "Getting another loan isn't good for you" "Uhhh why does he care?" I thought with a scowl. "I'll work here till I pay off everything." I assured him. "But, what if you get fired?. Anyway, I have a better offer for you. Marry me and you'll get the exact amount of money to pay off all your debts" "Who are you and why should I believe anything you tell me ?" I asked desperately. " And I can't marry someone I just met now" "It would take you 7 years to be able to pay off all of your parent's debts. If you get fired or worst of all, if you don't get the job you were promised, paying off the debt would take forever. Now I'm offering you the opportunity to pay your debts for once and lead a free life. Or don't you find me attractive enough? " "Of course I do….Damn.. I don't…I mean" I stuttered irresistibly. I could see the smirk on his face. "Hmmmh hmmm" I tried putting myself together. "What do you stand to gain from this sudden marriage?" I asked. "Promise you won't mention this to anyone because if you do, you would lose your job and won't get anything loan." "Is he threatening me?" I thought to myself. "Go on" I urged him. "I'm to be the next CEO of MacMahon group and I can't take up that position if I don't have a bride." I turned and looked at him again. "It's a family legacy" he added, clapping his hands on his thighs. "With all these money, you can't tell me you can't find a wife" "I'll find one then. You can leave since you're only interested in going into debt" he tried to dismiss me. "Ok slow down…. I accept your offer." "I thought so." I was a bit happy that I was finally free from all of my family's debt. I was scared about my future. I'm going to marry someone I just met. "Hello miss??" He snapped me out of my thoughts. "Hey." "Let's meet tomorrow to talk about the contract and also how and when you'd want the money. But it's definitely after the wedding. So you don't ghost me like…" he paused. " You may leave, miss ….." "Sophie" "Yes, Sophie" "Here…" he handed me a card containing his contact.
