What Answers Him

The darkness did not rush them. It circled. Elara felt it first in the pressure behind her eyes, in the way her breath shortened without her telling it to. The street was gone now, swallowed by shadow and silence. Even the city seemed to have stepped back. Kael stood completely still. His body had changed, not violently, not suddenly, but with terrifying intention. His shoulders broadened. His stance rooted itself into the ground like something ancient claiming territory. His shadow rose behind him, taller than it should have been, its edges sharpening. Elara wanted to look away. She didn’t. Something moved at the far end of the street. Not the scavenger. This presence was heavier, aware, patient. It did not hide. A voice slipped through the dark. Low. Amused. “You guard her like she already belongs to you.” Kael’s answer was immediate. “She does.” The air trembled. Elara’s heart slammed against her ribs. “Kael,” she whispered. “What is that?” “A collector,” he said. “They take what is unclaimed.” The shadow laughed softly. “And you think you can keep her?” Kael took one step forward. The ground responded. “You will leave,” he said. “Or you will be reminded why my kind does not hunt anymore.” Silence followed. Heavy. Calculating. Then the darkness withdrew, peeling back into the city like it had never been there. Kael exhaled, sharp and controlled. Only then did Elara realize her hands were shaking. And that something in the night now knew her name.
