The heart of darkness

I was dragged to Alessandro's office, my heart pounding in my chest. He sat behind his desk, his eyes dark, his expression unreadable. "You tried to warn them," he said, his voice low, his eyes filled with a chilling intensity. "I had to," I said, my voice trembling. "I couldn't let you do this." He laughed, a harsh, bitter sound. "Do what? Who do you think you are? Do you think you being a cop rat scares me? I have people like you in my pocket that I could call right now who would come kill you for me. So again Do what? Protect me? Defend my family?" "You're killing people," I said, tears streaming down my face. "You're turning this place into a slaughterhouse." "This is my world, Julia," he said, his voice hard. "This is how I survive." He stood up, his eyes narrowing, his expression ruthless. "You made your choice," he said, his voice cold. "Now, you'll have to live with the consequences." He turned away, his body rigid, his silence deafening. I knew I had lost him completely, that I had crossed a line I couldn't cross. The gunfire outside continued, the sounds of death echoing through the mansion.
