Chapter I

"Mandu!" I said as I gathered all my strength to lift her up, like a bag of rice, as steady as I could. This woman keeps on pestering me about some s**t news she heard. Decided to just jump at me while I was peacefully sitting on her love seat. "Put me down!" She shouted and angrily smacking my back, her legs wiggling. "Can you stop? Or I would not hesitate to throw you at your window." I said, she immediately stopped wiggling and I was glad she actually listened. I put her on the sofa and looked down at her. She looked up at me with a scowl on her pretty face, her cheeks puffing as she pouts, her eyebrows knitted together. I chuckled, such a fury kitten. "What are you on, kitten?" I asked her which she only replied with a huff and crossed her arms, still intently looking at me. "That," I started as I chuckled one more time. I got on my knees to level my eye on hers. Stroked her mandu cheeks with my right palm. She immediately leaned in, her demeanor already changing. She looked at me softly. "That's the stupidest thing you could believe in, Jennie." I said in a whisper, I didn't mean to but it came out that way, so be it. She smiled, her famous gummy smile that could melt me, every f*****g time. This is the side of her that I, of all people, have the privilege to see. "But Irene was, no, IS a bitch." She said "Surely, you could already tell if she's messing with you or not, Jennie. She's your best friend." I said chuckling. She arched her right eyebrow at me. I stood up, lift her again, her legs instantly wrapped around my waist. I lay us down the sofa, with her on top of me. Our legs tangled as she gets to a comfortable position, her head is against my chest. "She's not the best of a best friend. She's a bitch." She retorted, I groaned in frustration at her stubbornness. I caressed her hair as I kissed the top of her head. She relaxed at my touch. "Care to elaborate the news she's given you?" I asked instead. She hummed before telling me what happened. "She went to see Seulgi earlier today. Said that as she's nearing the gym, she could see some students looking at something. She got curious and said she was going to see it herself." Her hand that is rested on my neck turned into a fist, scrapping her nails on my skin. I hissed at the sharp sensation. "When was the last time you trimmed your nails, Ruby Jane?!" I hissed but she ignored me. This would leave a mark. f**k! "Then she saw you, and that b***h named Krystal, making out." She glared at me when I snorted. I stopped midway my laugh and just smiled sheepishly. "None of that happened, Mandu." I said and started stroking her hair again. "I could agree with you this time." She hummed. "Irene is a bitch." I continued and we both chuckled. Seriously, Irene really love to tease Jennie and the only way she could piss Jennie, according to her, is when my name is included. "There's more." She said after a while, "Rumor has it that you dragged that b***h in your room. Now, Manoban, do that or I will surely kill you the moment I got that proven." She warned and slapped my chest. I yelped "f**k! Some bitches you are. You, Irene and Chae." I said as I shook my head. She giggled. "Have you fallen in love, Lili?" She asked suddenly. My heart skipped a beat and started to pumped harder against my chest. Before I could worry about her hearing it, she beat me into it and chuckled. "Careful, you might die. So, I take it, you have." She said, "With whom, though?" "Must we really talk about this, Jennie?" I ask instead. There is no f*****g way I'd tell her who. At least not at this moment, not this soon. "Goodnight then, Manoban." She said with a yawn. I relaxed, and murmured good night. The next day, Jennie and I decided to just stay in her room not knowing what else to do since it's the weekend and they had no practice in cheer. Jennie, a fine sophisticated woman I have ever known. She has this aura that held power, that everyone around her would be willing to be under. That charm causes every one, both women and men to adore and think highly of her. Each of the population in the university are swoon by her charms, that everyone appointed her as the Queen bee. Cliché, I always tease her about the title they had given her and it never fails to piss her off. Mighty as she is, she does not like the power, she does not like the title and the attention people are giving her, willingly nor she likes what other perceived her to be. To her, she is just Jennie, a human. I tell you this, she is a woman of simplicity and elegance combined. She is my woman, my Jennie. Despite the fact that many adore her, few people are lucky enough to be called as her friend. I am one of those lucky ones, with Chae, Irene and Jisoo. We were inseparable, us five. We've been friends ever since those sperms met with those eggs. Then we met Seulgi and Bambam in middle grade. It's been our group, since then. Friendship is all that we had until I f*****g develop something more than that. And that scares me f*****g greatly. I've known love as pain, an emotion so vulnerable it could destroy you. I never wanted that, not since my parents had divorced and decided to part ways. But Jennie, it is inevitable. No matter how hard I tried to ignore, the harder it became for me to avoid. "Hey," Jennie said, waking me out of my trance. I looked at her across the dining table, her phone in her hand as she types away. "Jisoo, Chae and Irene are coming over together with Seulgi and Bambam." She informed me. I could only nod. They never let me spend an entire day with Jennie alone, f*****g friends they are. Those idiots knew my feelings towards Jennie, only the latter is oblivious. Now it became a wonder to me of what their intentions are. They do like to piss me off, really. "Do they know you spent the night here?" She asks, I shook my head no. "They'd be surprised." She says as she giggled. I only smiled, knowing full well that they won't be as surprise as she assumes, but kind of a different surprise. f*****g idiots knew I spend nights and days, long as we're both free, here at her room. "You're awfully quiet, something's bothering you?" She asks, genuinely curious as her eyes bore in me trying to read me. I waved my hand telling her I'm fine. But she tilts her head to the side and continued to look at me. "Afraid they might tease you?" She pries. "Nonsense. They always tease me every chance they get, you know those idiots." I said, smiling which she reciprocated as she nods. "Idiots as they are, you love them still." She said, sipping her coffee that I made her. She really loves coffee, the reason why I come to love that drink too. "That I wouldn't deny, even one bit." I stood, "Well, seeing as you love taking your time drinking that cup of coffee, I'll take my cue to shower. See you in a bit." I said as I walked up to her and leaned in for a kiss on her forehead. She smiles. An hour later, our friends arrived while Jennie is taking a shower. I answered the door for them with me drying my hair. The look in their faces when they saw me is priceless, I nearly laughed. "Told you she's here already." Jisoo said as she lifted her hand to them. They grunted as they placed 5 bucks on Jisoo's. I looked at them in disbelief. "The f*ck you on?" I asked, completely surprised at their antics. They ignored me and went inside the room which is spacious enough to accommodate every one of us. Irene and Chaeng sat on the sofa while Jisoo and Seulgi at the floor. Then it dawned on me that Bambam is not here. "Where's Bam?" I inquired, Jisoo and Seul busies themselves in setting up the xbox, which Jennie bought for me, because she knows my love for games. "They have practice. It was last minute so he didn't have the chance to tell you." Chaeng answered, her blonde hair in a tight ponytail. I nodded. "Jennie's in the shower so entertain yourself. I'd be on the kitchen, preparing these." I said as I picked the bags full of grocery and went to the kitchen. "Lisa! You're going to cook?" Irene shouted, I rolled my eyes and didn't bother to answer. "Please stop, Jennie would be mad knowing you're going to use her kitchen." They laugh. "F*ck off!" I hissed which only made them laugh louder. Embarrassing as it may sound, but I could not make a single dish for the life of me. Another reason why I'm always at Jennie's. I love her food. Once I finished preparing the food for Jennie to cook, I went to where my friends are. Chaeng and Irene are talking some random stuff, only them could understand. Well, we were never interested in what they were talking about, Jisoo, Seulg and I. "Scoot over, Chipmunk." I said as I took a seat beside her. I leaned my head on her shoulder and she started to caress my hair. Irene scoffed, "If Jennie sees that, you'd be dead again, Manoban." She says, smirking. That reminds me, "The f**k you told Jennie about Krystal? Stop pissing Jennie off, Irene. You're impossible." I said rolling my eyes. Jisoo and Seul snorted giving me the idea that they knew about this. Oh, they know very well, these idiots. "You'll thank me, one day, Manoban." Irene says, before I could ask her what's she's talking about, she continued. "When are you gonna tell her, Pranpriya?" She asks. "Tell who what, Irene?" Jennie asked as she made her way to us, confusion is on her face. Her hair is tied up in a messy bun, hot. I gulped and looked at Irene. "And sit up straight, Lisa." I obliged. "Well, her love to someone." Chaeng butted in, I snapped at her. f**k you Chaeng! Completely taken a back by her straightforwardness. I cursed silently. Jennie stopped and looked my way, eyebrow arched. "They're kidding. You know them, they love to tease me!" I said frantically and glared at Chaeng. "Yeah. Chill, Jennie. Your Lisa's yours." Chaeng said which me sigh in relief, she snorted. Jisoo and Seulg decided to be mute as of the moment. Remind me to kill them later. "Stay here while I cook, 'kay?" She said and went to the kitchen; I released a breath I didn't know I was holding. I glared at them. "Bastards." I muttered. They chuckled and went after Jennie. "We'll help!" Irene shouted. "Lisa," Seulg raised her head to look at me. Oh, look who decided to talk, I rolled my eyes, "I think Jennie likes you." "f**k, man. The way my heart leaped at what you said overwhelms me." I said and put my hand on my chest, trying to calm my nerves down. "And of course, she does. We're close friends, remember?" I said. "True. But we can see what your eyes are denying to see." This time, Jisoo talked. I keep silent as I started to think what they were saying. Jennie? Likes me? Could they be right? I don't know, I'd like to believe them but I couldn't bring myself to do so. I shook that thought away. No other word has been uttered as they continued to play. I lay down the sofa and decided to watch them. We spent the whole afternoon playing and talking. Just chillin' in general. Everything was fine until Bambam and Kai arrived. Kai? He was never invited to our friends hang outs, so why is he here all of a sudden? "Kai just dropped me off here." Bambam said, I raised my brow in confusion. "He came to see Jennie." My heart sank. I hope I am wrong this time. "Kai." Jennie called, walked to the door. I could see Seul and Jisoo looking at me at my peripheral vision. I smiled bitterly. Is this what I think it is? Kai smiled as soon as Jennie reached the door. I couldn't see Jennie's reaction as her back is facing me. The man is gorgeous alright, tall and is built. One of the popular players in the University as he was the team captain of basketball. I've known him to be every one's crush, he has that charisma, not gonna lie. "Hey there, Jen. Thought I'd drop Bambam here in any chance that I could see you. Pretty lucky, I did." He smiles down at Jennie. At this moment, my mind went blank. "It's pretty late. I don't mean to be rude but I think you're tired, you should go." Jennie said. I sat back down at the sofa and tried myself to ignore them. "No worries. I only came here to see you even for a sec. Goodnight then, Jennie. I should be going now, bye guys." He said and finally the door closes. I sigh, Jennie went back to sit on my side. I couldn't let her know how much that encounter affects me so I mustered a smile at her and tried my best to sound giddy. "Got yourself an admirer huh?" I said. She shook her head and smiled softly at me. Uh oh, I do not like that look at all. "And lucky bastard, you like him too?" I said, smiling. My cheek hurts, f**k it. She nodded sheepishly as her face turns pinkish. She leaned her head on my shoulder and I'm so glad she did so I could stop pretending and let pain be visible on my face. I know my friends know what I feel, right now. With the exemption of Bambam. He has no clue. I smiled bitterly. "Well," I said and tap Jennie's shoulder so I could stand. "Such a lovely day it has been but I need to be somewhere." My friends told me to take care and did not asked anymore which I appreciate their thoughts. Jennie stood up as well. "I thought you're going to spend the night here?" She asks, and walked after me as I made my way at her door. "It is of importance, Mandu." I answered and faced her again. I leaned in to kiss her at the corner of her lips, most bold move I've ever done since. She was shocked, startled but didn't seem to be bothered by it and let it slide. "Take care, then. See you tomorrow?" She said, not trusting my voice, I only nodded and went outside. For the nth time today, I sighed. What now? -------------- For the next few days, I tried my best to shake off the feeling that has been bugging me ever since that Kai showed up in her room. Jennie may or may not notice the change in my behavior, she’s good at hiding her thoughts. She’s that kind of a person. It irritates me how I could not read her; I hate not knowing what she feels. But then again, there must be no reason for her to dwell on such attitude I had been giving her. That, or I’m perfectly good at lying to her face. “You’ve not been on my lair, Lisa.” Jennie states as she looked at me through her eyelashes all the while she sips her morning coffee. I hummed, “Practice has been demanding my time.” I said and smiled, I looked outside the window, students are chattering. I sighed, “How demanding could it be? Last time I checked; practice always stops at seven.” She said, I could feel her eyes staring intently at my side profile. I was wrong. Of course, she could see the change of vibe I’ve been giving. She just sits there, with no trace of anything in her face, no emotions at all. How could she sit there as calm when I could not even muster a proper sentence with my head going haywire. She sat up straight, looked at me with her arms crossed, her leg on top of the other. Gorgeously hot she might look but I tried to pry away my gaze at her. She’s too much of a sight for me. The corner of my lip slightly raised as her words sank in. “Of course. You, of all people, knows my schedule.” I said smirking at her way. Only her eyebrow moved, arching. I chuckled, “I am not your child, Jennie.” I sighed. “Never did I own you as one.” She retorted. “Are you, perhaps, avoiding me?” I smiled, this time I looked at her straight in the eye, her cat like meets mine. Imagine the thump of my heart at that. “What makes you think that I am?” I asked, smile is playing on my lips. She rolled her eyes. Now, how many times did I imagine seeing that in a different circumstance. Thinking about it gives chill down my spine, slightly tightening my pants. I internally groaned. “Because I know you too well, Manoban.” She glared, leaned in a bit and I got a better view of the hill down there. Hands down the table, intertwined. “Eyes up here. You keep on doing that.” Oops, busted. “Sorry, got distracted.” I say, smirking. She rolled her eyes again. One more time, just one more f*****g roll that eyes. I bit my lower lip to restrain myself of saying something I’d probably regret later on. “Obviously,” Her voice laced with sarcasm. “Tell you what, I know you’ve been hanging out with Jisoo and Seul. So why the f**k can’t you enter my room when you had time with those idiots?” “Woah woah! Easy there, kitten. Since when did you learn to curse?” Well, I’d like to hear that somewhere secluded. Dang it. My mind’s really not cooperating right now. I shook my head. “We’re not hanging out, as you put it. They were watching me as I practice. You know them” “Is this because of Kai?” She asks, leaning back and ignoring what I said. Those eyes held anger, frustrations and something else I couldn’t name. I sigh, “No, Jennie.” I lied, “Don’t you like him?” She presses. It’s my turn to roll my eyes. Stupid, of course I don’t like him. “He’s good, Jennie. If that’s what this conversation is about.” I say, “Is this what’s been bothering you? Jennie, you could like someone without thinking about me. We’re friends. Friends support each other, am I right?” Her lips pressed together, her frustrations clearly showing. But instead of saying anything, she stands and muttered goodbye, then she left. My eyes follow her as she exits the café. I shook my head in disbelief. What a stubborn woman. …. “Okay, line up everyone. From the top!” Namjoon hyung, our dance mentor, commanded. Sweat is trickling down my neck as we move to our choreo. We’ve been here at least past an hour already and made progress with the dance. Competition is nearing and schedules has been hectic, tight for that matter. Seul and Jisoo sat at the floor in front of us. This studio is big enough for music, art and dance practice. They kept their focus on me. These idiots, treating me like a little f*****g girl. “Jennie?” I heard Seul say, I look at her and followed her line of sight and there I saw Jennie walking towards the two but her eyes are focused on me. I gulped, what is she doing here? She cut our staring contest as she greets Jisoo and Seul. “Well, what a supportive girlfriend.” Krystal says beside me and giggles, I smiled at her, shaking my head at her. My eyes found its way back to Jennie, only to find out that she’s looking at me straight in the eye, void of any emotion. What is she thinking? “Focus!” Namjoon hyung yelled, and I have no choice but to look away from Jennie’s intense glare. The song started to play. I tried to stay focus even if Jennie keeps on pestering my mind. I hope this would come out good, knowing she’s just there, watching. The song is a combination of sexy and swag. Throughout the dance, my gaze keeps on going back to the cat like eyes that’s been staring at me. I gathered courage to look at her as intensely as I could muster. Our gazes never left each other. She just stares at me, no emotion at all. Damn that ability to hide her feelings. The song stopped, so do we. Only then our stares stopped, I gulped down my nervousness. Namjoon hyung was pleased at our performance and said we’re dismissed which I’m glad. I knew my strength drained. I walked up to where Jisoo, Seul and Jennie are, sweating. My gym bag is beside them, opened. “Hot Hot Hot!” Seul laughed with her hands up in her face, fanning it, together with Jisoo. Jennie did not utter any word and just stands there. “Jennie…” I called her, she moved closer to me with a towel and a bottled water on each of her hand. I smiled and reached for the water. Thirsty as I am, I muttered my thanks then gulped down the water in one go. Jennie surprised me when she raised her hand to wipe the sweat on my neck, her left hand rested on my chest. I stopped gulping but the bottle is still on my lips, my eyes looking down at her. She did not give me a glance and just continued wiping my sweat. I am sure she could feel my heart against my chest, which where her hand is rested. Then she wipes the sweat on my cheek, and forehead. I smiled, and held her hand to stop her. Only then she gave me a glance, as if she was awakened on a trance. I nearly laughed. “Okay, I’ll stay the night at yours.” I say softly then leaned down to kiss her cheek. She pushes me and hit my arm, rolling her eyes. I chuckled when she walked away. “Might as well get out of here since they decided we don’t exist, huh Seul?” I heard Jisoo say shaking her head. I laughed. “Let’s go.” I said
