Chapter 4 Selene's POV The house had been quiet since morning, it was too quiet even the guards who usually lingered outside my door had disappeared, and for the first time since Damon locked me up, I allowed myself to sit by the window without feeling watched. I could hear the faint rustle of the leaves outside, the steady rhythm of the wind. It should have been peaceful but peace did not come easily to me anymore. I was replaying the nightmare from the night before Caleb’s voice, the lies, the gunshot when I heard the slam of the front door. “Where is he?” It was a woman's voice. I noticed that she talked in a confident, angry tone. I could hear the sound of her shoes echoing down the hall. Whoever she was, she did not sound like someone who needed to knock or ask for permission before entering Damon's house. I froze where I was sitting when I heard the sound of her footsteps getting close. Before I could even move, the door burst open. She stepped inside like she owned the place, she was tall, beautiful and there was this aura of power in every of her movements. Her hair was a sharp line of black against her skin, and her clothes were travel worn but it was still elegant. She looked at me immediately, her eyes narrowed. “And who the hell are you?” She asked and I did not answer, I was too startled to speak. She laughed in disbelief and in disgust mixed in one tone. “Of course.” She muttered. “Of course he had brought home a Crescent.” The word Crescent came out like a curse, I stood up slowly, keeping my voice steady. “Who are you?” Her gaze hardened. “Lyra.” She said, “Damon’s partner, his Luna.” My chest tightened, but I did not let it show. “Luna?” I repeated quietly. “Yes.” She said, crossing her arms. “Luna, the title belongs to me, not to some Crescent stray he felt sorry for.” I felt my pulse quicken, but I said nothing. Lyra’s eyes flicked around the room, taking in the clean sheets, the folded clothes, the untouched breakfast tray on the table. Her expression twisted. “So this is what you have been doing while we fight and bleed for this pack.” She said, “Living comfortably in his house, eating his food. What did you give him in return?” My jaw clenched. “You don’t know what you are talking about.” “Oh, I know enough.” She snapped “Damon does not bring Crescent wolves into his home, ever. So either you have bewitched him, or he has lost his mind.” I took a small step back, but she followed me. Her voice dropped, it was sharp and venomous. “Listen carefully, Crescent you may have fooled the guards, but you won’t fool me. You don’t belong here, you are a traitor to your kind and a stain on ours.” “I never asked to be here,” I said quietly. She laughed in a bitter tone.“Then leave right now before I throw you out myself.” She said and I did not move. Her eyes flashed in anger. “Did you not hear me?” “I heard you,” I said, keeping my tone steady. “But if Damon wanted me gone, I would already be dead.” That made her flinch, then her expression hardened again. “You think hiding behind his name will protect you?” “I am not hiding behind anyone.” I retorted. Her lip curled. “You think you are special, don’t you? The wounded little wolf he rescued from poor Selene Crescent let me tell you something-” She jabbed a finger toward my chest. “Damon doesn’t keep broken things for long. When he is done with you, he will toss you aside just like everyone else has.” My hands trembled, but I refused to look away. “You don’t know anything about me.” I said quietly. “And I don’t need to.” She hissed. “You reek of Crescent blood, that is enough.” Something inside me twisted, maybe it was anger, or maybe it was exhaustion. I had had enough of being hated for things I did not choose: the family I was born into, the man I was mated to, the Alpha who now kept me prisoner. “You think being Damon’s partner gives you the right to treat everyone like dirt?” I said, my voice was rising. “You have no idea what I have been through.” Lyra took a step closer, her face was just a little bit from mine. “I don’t care what you have been through, you don’t belong here.” Her words hit very hard but I did not back down. “I am not here by choice.” I snapped back. “You think I want to live among people who hate me? You think I asked to be kept like some captive pet?” “Then run.” She snapped. “Go back to your Crescent filth, we don’t need your kind in this house.” The words cut through me I swallowed hard, forcing down the burn in my throat. “You are right.” I said. “You don’t need me and I sure as hell don’t need you.” Her eyes blazed. “Watch your mouth.” “Why?” I stepped closer, matching her glare. “Afraid your Alpha might hear the truth?” Her expression darkened, her rage was moving past her control. “You think you can talk to me like that in his house?” “Last time I checked, it wasn't yours.” I said. That did it, her hand came forward, grabbing my wrist. Her nails dug into my skin and it was hard enough to draw blood. “You little-” Before she could finish, a deep growl tore and the sound made the both of us freeze instantly. The door behind her slammed open, Damon was standing there. His eyes glowed faintly, his chest was rising and falling for a moment, he did not speak, the sound that came from him was more wolf than man. “Lyra.” He said, his voice was low and dangerous. Lyra let go of my wrist immediately, taking a step back. “Damon, I-” “Don’t.” His voice cut through the air, it was sharp and final.
