Chapter 5: A Day at the Beach The kid managed to talk me into taking him to the beach, of all things. I could get plenty of salt water back home if I wanted it, but he was determined to show off the local swimming and surfing spots. South Carolina beaches are different from California, I found. The sand is gray, for one thing, and the water’s a damn sight warmer. I even allowed myself to be coaxed into the surf for a couple of short swims, though I’ll admit the chance to brush up against J.T.’s wet, half-naked body had a lot to do with my acceptance. I watched the kid cavort in the waves, the sun glistening off his bronzed body. I loved the way he dove beneath the swells, coming up beyond the curling wave with a flip of his long, dripping mane of dark hair. I wasn’t the only one watching
