I've been working at the perfume shop for three weeks now. Everything is going well. I'm healthy and my baby is healthy. I don't go for a check up because werewolf pregnancy and human pregnancy are not the same. If I go to check up, they will ask questions if they figure out that my pregnancy is different from the normal pregnancy they know. And knowing humans, they are curious. I wont even be surprised if someone kidnaps me and tries to experiment on me.
I can hear the heartbeat of my baby, I can feel its kick. It's enough to know that my baby is fine. Juliane is also following up with us. She gave me enough medicine that will see me through my six months of pregnancy. Werewolves can only be pregnant for six months. It's one of the reasons I don't want to go to the hospital. I know that this will be a problem when it's time for me to give birth, but I know that by then we will figure out something.
Grandma is yet to know about my job. I always make sure to come home before she returns. And luckily my shift helps. I won't just sit and watch grandma take up all the responsibilities. I will have to help in one way or the other.
My phone rings and it's a call from Juliane. She's the one that always calls me. She said it's safe and best that way. I will only call her whenever there is an emergency. She knows where me and grandma are staying in case there's any emergency regarding my pregnancy or anything that needs her urgent presence, she will be able to find us.
She's also being careful. She feels that Adrian is keeping an eye on her since she's one of the people I'm close to. She said that he came to the hospital after we left. And he was told that I had been discharged a few days back. Juliane changed the log book beforehand, and it convinced Adrian.
I wonder why he's looking for me. Isn't he now with the woman he loves? Could it be that he knows about my pregnancy?
I don't think so. There's no way he would have found out.
“Hello,” I answer the call. I'm the only one at the shop right now, there's no customer so it's a perfect time to answer her call.
“Hi Ada, how are you doing?” She whispers.
“I'm fine. What about you? Are things okay on that side?” I told Juliane about my job. Just like grandma she also doesn't want me to work because of my pregnancy. Since she's not here with us, she wants me to be careful and not do strenuous things that will be harmful to the baby. But she was okay with it after I told her the kind of job I'm working. All I have to do is sit behind a desk, take customers orders and do the transaction.
It's a good thing I do not have a baby bump, so nobody knows I'm pregnant. Juliane said it's a normal thing. Some wolves don't have baby bumps until four or five months in. And some will have but it won't even be noticeable even till they give birth. It all depends on body type and it's also the same in some humans. It seems I have that type of body and I'm glad about it. It will be easier for me to hide my pregnancy and avoid unnecessary questions and eyes on me.
“Well everything is fine. I just want to check up on you and know how you are doing. Hope you are taking your medication, especially the one I said you should take every night?”
She always reminds me to take that particular medicine. She makes it feel more important than others. I asked her what medicine it is and she just said it's for keeping the baby healthy. I realized that she doesn't want to tell me what that medicine is, so I didn't ask again. I trust her so I take them without questions.
“Yes. There's no issue at all. I feel strong and my baby is doing well. I can hear the heartbeat and feel the kick.” I reply as I rub my hand on my stomach. It's a habit I developed since I found out I'm pregnant. I'm trying to be secretive with it so it won't lead to questions.
“Good. How is grandma? Hope she's doing well?”
“She's fine. I feel guilty seeing the way she works hard everyday for me and my baby. I hate the fact that I dragged her into this mess.”
“What happened is not your fault, Ada. She's your grandmother and she loves you. You are the only family she has. If you are in her shoes, you will do the same.”
I know but, yet I feel guilty. Grandma should be living her life and not being stuck here in Newcastle while we pretend to be humans and hide from the hunters.
“Actually, there's something else I want to tell you.” Juliane draws my attention. “Remember the owner of that company, your grandma rented the car?”
“Yes. Have you found him?”
After we left, Juliane investigated the incident that happened at grandma's place. She went to the rental company but they said that the company has been sold to another person. They also refused to give out the contact of the previous owner and strangely the car grandma rented wasn't registered in that company. It was enough to tell us that everything was planned. The only way to find out who planned it all is to find the man that rented that car to grandma and Juliane has been in it.
She also took care of the burnt car. And of course it was handled with money. She paid a local garage owner who secretly took the car. He was paid to keep his mouth shut. Juliane refused to take money from me to handle the situation but I insisted. It was one of the things that took up the alimony.
“Yes. I found him but he's dead.”
“What!”
“I believe he was murdered. Maybe the person that paid him to put that bomb in the car knows that I'm looking for him so he or she killed him.”
“This is serious Juliane. I think you need to stop investigating this. Your life could be in danger.” My heart is beating so fast. I'm suddenly consumed with fear. Fear that something bad may happen
