Chapter 3

I woke well before dawn the next morning, ready to set out for the city. Werewolves do not do well within the city life; they much rather prefer living off the grid or out in the countryside. I finished loading my bags into the back of my black Lamborghini when Jacob came up behind me and slapped me on the back. “Are we ready to get this show on the road?” he asks me excitedly. Jacob Renaldi was my cousin from my fathers late brother, Mark. Mark was killed last year by Thorin and his pack, and Jacob has been taking his death very hard. His 18th birthday is in just a few more months, so he soon would also be in search of his mate. I hoped that once he did, it would ease his grieving a bit. I smiled back at him “Hell yeah!” I anwered, play punching him in the shoulder. We both get in the car, but were stopped before we could make it down the driveway. Katherine comes running up to my window, motioning for me to stop. Katherine was my fathers lover. My mother had passed away when i was young, leaving my father an emotional wreck for years. When a werewolve’s mate dies, it will drive their partner to the edge and many commit suicide. The pain of being left behind by your mate is unfathomable, so my father told me. I was grateful that he found Katherine because she seemed to keep him happy. Their relationship was much different than if they were mates, but it seemed to help dull his pain. Katherine pants heavily, out of breath. “I think i found her” She says excitedly. She hands me her tablet with a picture of a girl on it. I take it and my breath hitches in my throat. All I could do was stare at the picture in silence. It was her. She was 100% real. And she was definitely his mate. I struggled to tear my eyes away from the picture to look back up at Katherine. I didnt even have to say a word before she squealed with happiness. Jacob laughs in the passenger seat. “Finding her was way easier than i thought it would be!” She says excitedly, continuing, “ Her name is Sophia Bane, and she lives in Los Angeles. I will text you her current address. Oh, and she turns eighteen in two days. You have to hurry!” She finishes, waving us off. She didn't have to tell me twice. I stomped on the gas hard, launching off down our mile long driveway. We had a long drive ahead of us, since we lived in Florida. We managed to make it into Texas before we stopped to eat lunch and to take a quick break from driving. I sat across from Jacob in the diner, thinking about Sophia. Even though I was beyond excited to finally see her in person, I could not shake the building up fear of what she might do when she saw me. What if she rejected me? What if she refused to come back home with us? Jacob could see the worry in my expression as i stared off into space. “Dude, she is your mate. She will love you!” He exclaimed, kicking my shin under the table, getting my attention. “I hope so,” I said quietly. Once we left the restaurant, I let Jacob take over as the driver for awhile. We still had a long way to go, and did not have any time to make any more stops from here on.
