The morning sun peeked through the window, casting its light into Richard’s small, suffocating rented room. But it could not dispel the darkness in Elena’s heart. She awoke from a terrifying dream, a feeling of suffocation and exhaustion enveloping her, as though she no longer had the strength to face the world. She dreamt of Rosa, her daughter’s pale face, her lips cracked and dry. That image made her feel more helpless than ever. Her daughter lay there, and she couldn’t do anything to save her.
