CHAPTER 3 – THE INVESTIGATION

Rhys’ pov The forest looked different during the day. It felt different also. “do you still believe it was deliberate” kruz spoke over the phone. “I know it was” “the council thinks we’re dealing with trespassers.” “we could be” I wasn’t thinking of the potential trespassers, my mind drifted to the image of the silver wolf. “are you aware that youre late” a voice spoke from behind me I turned, “its you” “unfortunately” she deadpanned I heard the faint voice of kruz coming from the phone, “talk later” I said before I hung up. Nyra walked past me and I followed instinctively It was her. In my territory once again Only this time she wasn’t hiding to be found. She was here. In her human form walking three feet in front of me, And my wolf cant seem to control itself. “you’re walking in front of me like you already know what werelooking for” “I do” “how come?” “that’s why I was here the other night” “elaborate” She didn’t answer “if we’re going to work together, you need to talk to me” “I’ll only tell you what you need to know from me” We came to a stop in front of the tree, neither of us uttering a word. I just watched her observe the carving before she pulled out a book from the bag she was carrying. “whats that?” I asked “my mothers journal” “why did you bring it along?” She rolled her eyes, flipping through the pages before she came to a halt. “look,” she pointed at the page causing me to move closer to her I felt my mark burn at the proximity but I ignored it, she felt it too cause she stepped away causing it settle. “it’s the same symbol” I noticed “yes, it is. My mother had researched about it. Its ancient but it has meaning” She looked at me. My father had said it didn’t have meaning at the meeting. “your father lied” she said I narrowed my eyes at her accusation, “why would he do that?” “you’ll have to ask him that yourself” “but you know why” “yes, I do.” “tell me.” “I’ll only tell you what you need to know from me.” “you’re difficult” She scoffed, “anyways, there’s more” “what do you mean” “the symbol isn’t complete. Its apart of a message, this portion belongs to duskveil. Each pack has their own symbol.” “so we’re looking for four more symbols?” “yes.” “and whats the message?” “I don’t know, someone tore out pages from the journal. we will have to find the symbols first and piece together our own research” I studied for a second “so youre saying that your mother had done research about the symbols, found their meaning and now the pages are ripped out?” “yes” “so how do we know what we’re looking for?” “I have been able to conclude on two things so far from what I have” “which are?” “the first being the fact that each symbol has its significant meaning and power. Second being there was a reason the pages were ripped out which means someone is hiding something.” “you’re confident your mother didn’t have an alterior motive?” “I know my mother” Her voice softened “did she give you the journal?” “no, my father did” “and he didn’t question the missing pages?” “of course he did but he didn’t find anything” “you don’t believe him?” She gave me a look, “I believe he didn’t find anything but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to find” I glanced over at the symbol again. “fair, so where do you want to start” “since duskveil is here, that means the others should be scattered around here somewhere and if not then its in other territories. I know that my mum was trying to figure out what they meant together” “the starting point feels a bit broad.” “its still a start. I just need to find the other four” “what do you think your mother found that caused someone to destroy the evidence” “I don’t know but they definitely went through a lot of trouble to make sure she couldn’t reveal what she discovered” “then we have a problem” “we?” She raised her eyebrow “you think I’m going to let you do this alone?” Her eyes narrowed “we’re working together” I stated “i don’t remember agreeing to that” “you don’t have to” “that’s not how it works” “it certainly is when its my territory and besides we were assigned together” I winked She scoffed “I don’t trust you, baxter” I was taken aback. “you don’t know me” “I know enough” “about me? Doubt that” “don’t start. My mother spent way too much time warning me about your family, I do not want to be involved with you” “nyra” She grimaced “don’t—” “don’t what?” “I know what you’re going to say but I’d advice you not to, can we carry on?” She didn’t wait for me to respond, she never did before she walked away, Did she just reject me?
