Chapter 5

1163 Words
Sandi As I lay there, I couldn't help but wonder about my real parents. What had happened to them? Why did they leave me in the woods all alone? Were they even still alive? Or was my mother right? Were they murdered? I eventually fell asleep with continuous questions racing through my mind, only to dream about huge monsters with large teeth and hate-filled eyes covered in blood chasing me through the dark woods to my horrific and violent death. My alarm went off all too soon, and I awoke on the morning of my high school graduation. Stumbling out of bed, I made my way out of my bedroom and into the hallway. Rubbing my eyes, I slowly walked to the kitchen. As soon as I entered the kitchen, I began making breakfast for the three of us. I walked over to the coffee maker and turned it on. Then, turning towards the refrigerator, I opened the door and pulled the bacon and eggs out, setting them on the kitchen bench. Opening the kitchen cupboard, I got the frying pan out and set it on the stove to start cooking. Once the bacon was in the pan, I put four slices of bread in the toaster, but I hadn't popped them down yet. It wasn't long before the smell of the frying bacon brought my parents out of their bedroom. "Good morning," I said, smiling at them both as I handed each of them their morning coffees. They took the coffee eagerly, smiling their thanks. "Breakfast smells good," my father said, as he walked over to the dining table and took a seat. "It sure does," my Mom agreed, taking the seat directly opposite my father. I smiled at them, before turning back to the frying pan on the stove. I cracked eggs into the frying pan, and then I popped the bread down into the toaster. It wasn't long before the food was cooked, and the toast had popped. I buttered the toast and placed it on a serving plate and placed it in the middle of the table. Then I served up the rest of the food. Once I had all the food set out on plates, I served my parents their breakfast and walked back over to the bench and grabbed my plate and the plate of toast. Sitting down, I began eating my breakfast. "So, are you nervous?" my mother asked me, smiling at me happily. "A little. But more excited than nervous," I told her. "Well, that's to be expected. And after today, we will be headed towards a new start in another town," my father chimed in, smiling like the cat that just ate the canary. "That's right," my mother told him, placing her hand over his and smiling at him. I didn't say anything about that, because, thanks to Lindsay, I knew we had other things we needed to be concerned about. So, I just ate my breakfast in silence. After I had finished my breakfast, I put my plate into the sink and went to my bedroom to get ready for my graduation ceremony. Alpha Kayden I was out for my morning run. Running through the woods in my wolf form. Today was the day that the senior students of the local high school would graduate. This meant that I would be seated in the auditorium and viewing the girls I had short-listed. I would be able to learn more about the girls from what the school's principal had to say about them. Seeing them after they removed their caps and gowns would also provide me with the opportunity to see the girls' physical make-up. It was the only way for me to see if they were physically strong. As I ran through the woods, I jumped over fallen logs and dodged trees and large boulders. I had so much on my mind that I decided to take a back seat and allow my wolf, Steel, take control. The moment he was in control, Steel began to run faster, pushing himself harder as we rushed by the trees, and they became a blur of colors all mixed in together. "So... we will soon have some fresh meat to torture," Steel declared happily. "It sure seems that way," I told him. "Good. I have been getting bored with the old ones. The novelty wore off of them years ago," he stated, as he continued to race through the woods. "Well, today we get to choose some new girls," I assured him. "Well, hopefully these new ones will be interesting. The girls we have here... they are so boring," he said. "Now, now, Steel. They are here to do a job. And, so long as they do the jobs that they are expected to do, they get to live," I reminded him. "And if they don't, they die," he declared with a happy chuckle. "You are so bloodthirsty," I told him, smiling in amusement. "That I am," he agreed, proud of that fact. "Oh... you are an evil one, aren't you?" I said, laughing happily. "You love it," he said, returning my laugh. We kept running until we reached the river that ran along the eastern border of our territory. Once we were on the river's edge, I took control once more. Standing there, on the bank of the river, I watched the fast flowing water for a few minutes before casting a glance at the sky. The sky was clear blue, there wasn't a cloud in sight, as far as the eye could see. But despite that, the air around me felt charged. There was definitely weather headed our way. I looked back at the river once more. The water was almost mesmerizing as it flowed. I felt so relaxed just watching it. Knowing I needed to head back and get ready to go to the school graduation ceremony, I turned away from the river and began making my way back towards the pack house. There was a lot I needed to do, and I had been out here longer than I had planned to be. I was going to be cutting it fine. I didn't want to be late for the graduation. To be late would mean drawing unwanted attention to me and Liam. And werewolves didn't like attention. We were all about avoiding attention from humans. The fewer humans who knew about our existence, the better. We lived in the shadows. Our very existence depended on humans not knowing we were out there. Sure, they could see werewolves on their television screens as they watched their Hollywood movies, and their television shows. Or they could read about them in their story books. We loved knowing that humans had nightmares about werewolves. That they were terrified of us. It was exciting for us. Got the blood pumping. It was just a shame for us that we couldn't let them know that we really existed!
