I sat quietly in my office, eyes glued to my laptop screen, immersed in my latest project. The room was silent until a loud bang on my office door startled me. My eyes narrowed with annoyance as I looked up, ready to lash out at whoever had dared to barge in.
There she was, Amelia. Strutting in as if she owned the place, arms full of shopping bags and an air of entitlement.
“Don’t you know how to knock? Or at least open the door like someone with manners?” I asked sharply, trying to keep my voice calm while returning my focus back to the laptop.
“Sorry, sis,” Amelia replied nonchalantly, placing her things down and flopping into the chair opposite me.
“How are you? This is for you.” She slid a milkshake onto my desk like a peace offering, then made herself comfortable. I didn’t even look up.
“Why are you here, Amelia?” I asked. I knew my sister’s patterns too well. Amelia never showed up without an agenda.
“Can’t I visit my favourite sister?” Amelia answered with a grin, tilting her head with mock innocence. I raised an eyebrow giving her a look that meant: I know you too well to believe that.
“Okay, okay,” Amelia admitted. “There’s this party I really want to go to, but Mom won’t let me unless you help convince her.” She pouted dramatically. “You’re her favourite, so…. Please?”
Before I could respond, a new email notification pinged on my screen. I clicked it absentmindedly and then froze. My eyes widened.
“Oh my God,” I whispered.
“What? What is it?” Amelia asked, suddenly sitting up straighter, concern briefly replacing her playfulness.
I looked up, my voice shaking slightly with joy. “Amelia… Clayton Cooperation just reached out. They want me to design their new fashion headquarters.
Amelia blinked. “You mean The Clayton Cooperation?”
I stood up slowly, disbelief still sinking in. “Yes. They said they have been following my work… and they want to meet me tomorrow.”
For a moment, we just stared at each other. Then Amelia jumped up and threw her arms around me.
“I knew this was your time! You’re going to take your company to the next level, sis!”
I hugged her back, overwhelmed. For the first time, I felt it in my bones. I was being seen, recognized, and chosen. And for once, even Amelia’s presence felt like the right kind chaos.
