We followed the host deeper into the restaurant, through warm lighting and quiet conversations that floated around like whispers. Couples leaning close, wine glasses clinked gently, and every table had candles glowing like tiny fireflies trapped in glass. Our table was set near a tall window overlooking the city—New York shining like it wanted to show off. Mason pulled out a chair for me, and I sat, trying to keep calm.
