There was something about his expression that looked immutable, something about his eyes that made her think he was dead inside. The longer Sian looked at him, the more she realised she was right to be scared of him. ‘I’m an old mate of your ma and pa’s.’ He stared at her, as if trying to work something out. ‘You know who your mum and dad were, right? You’ve worked it out by now? I’ve heard tell from certain colleagues of mine that you’re a clever gal.’ Sian sat still and gritted her teeth.
