Every movement the nurse made was soft and slow. Sian wanted to brush her off and jump down from the bed. She wasn’t a patient person at the best of times but all she could think about was the pendant and how she should have stayed down in the cellar long enough to grab it, rather than letting Kris drag her back upstairs. The nurse placed Sian's foot down on the bottom end of the bed. The bruises were really coming out now, in vivid purples and blues. 'It’s your fifth metatarsal. We call this fracture “the Beckham”, after its most famous victim,' the nurse said. She stroked Sian's foot then pulled on an elastic support without touching the skin.
