Danielle’s POV
“Mmmmm”, Sarah moaned after taking a bite of the curry chicken that I had prepared earlier.
We were all sitting at the dining area, them eating and me unable to ingest anything without having the urge to puke.
After Zeke had left me standing in the living room, speechless and further broken, Sarah had insisted that she was hungry and wanted to eat dinner, of course, with him.
“If I had a choice, I would order takeout, but it's too late, so this will have to down,” was what she said while climbing down the stairs and pointing a finger at the table, a disgusted look on her face.
She had then turned to me with a smile that seemed almost psychotic playing on her lips, clasped her hands together and said, “you see, my nails are newly installed, so serve us, please.”
In that instant, I felt like throwing a slap across her face, but I didn't. I looked towards Zeke, who had changed out of his office clothes and was now sporting sweatpants and a wife-beater. He averted his gaze and only walked past us to sit at the table.
And now, currently, we were all sitting at the table, Zeke and Sarah side by side, and I was directly across Sarah.
My hands gripped the fork in my hand tightly, and my nails were almost cutting into my flesh with how intense the grip was.
I ate my meal silently, watching them eat and exchange flirtatious smiles. The only reason why I was still at the table is because I had earlier promised myself that nothing, not even the two people currently almost up in each other’s faces, will make me miss dinner.
Sarah did not miss a chance to laugh loudly or brush her hands over his chest seductively.
“Oh my God, do you know what I just remembered?” She asked him, her eyes lightening up like a child that was given ice cream after asking so many times.
“Tell me.”
“You remember that one time when we both got so drunk while on vacation in Greece and got matching tattoos?”
“Ah, yes. We had to book a laser appointment later on to get rid of them.”
“You do remember.” She slapped her hands over his chest while laughing loudly. “ That was such a fun time.”
“Yes”, his voice softened, “yes, it was.”
In that moment, he looked so in love with her that I was reminded of why I am the one in this marriage and not her. Since they had been in love once.
Shocking, but Sarah and Zeke were once in a relationship until she was asked to marry him, so our father's almost failing company could be saved. Of course, Zeke agreed. She was, after all, the love of his life. But, she refused, claiming she wasn't ready for marriage and that he was not really her type.
“He's too boring for me”, was her response to father when he brought it up, “he doesn't excite me. I don't love him.”
True to her words, the next day, Zeke found her with another man. An engagement ring was in one hand, flowers on the other, but that day, he left a broken man.
That night, father called me into his study and told me I'd be getting married to Zeke since Sarah had refused. That was the beginning of this whole situation.
During our “courtship” period, I tried to be a true friend to him since I knew he was heartbroken and needed a friend. It was around the period of being a friend and a fake fiancee that the lines became blurry, and my heart started acting for him. Then, he pulled away.
Sarah's loud laugh brought me out of my thoughts, reminding me that I was still at the table, and they were still flirting. Soon, I was done, and I stood to walk away from the scene playing out in my front, so I could go up into my room and try to sleep or at the least, read one of the books on my to be read list on k****e.
I scooted away from the table so I could stand and take my plates to the kitchen, already deciding I'd clean the dishes tomorrow.
“Oh, Dani love,” she purred my name, “take these along, will you?”
At first, I thought she was kidding, but seeing her lips curled up in a satisfied smirk, made the brewing anger inside of me rise to the top and I had to take deep breaths to call myself.
“The kitchen is just there,” I replied to her after I had regained my composure.
“True. But you are on your way there, aren't you? What do you say we save me some energy and you do it instead?”
“Wha..wh…”, I spluttered, unable to comprehend the words coming from her. I turned to Zeke, who was just sitting there, and scrolling through his phone.
“Zeke!”
I slapped my hands on the table roughly, causing them both to flinch slightly.
“What is it?” He didn't even bother taking his eyes off his phone for a second and continued doing whatever it was he was doing.
For a minute, all my pent-up frustration took the best of me. I walked closer to him, snatched his phone from him, and flung it across the wall.
Sarah scrambled to her feet and hid behind Zeke, who was also now on his feet.
“What the heck? Why would you do that?”
“Oh, why? Why? I should be the one asking you that. What are you doing? Why are you sitting here and watching her say all those filthy words to me? What's going on?”
“What?”
“Don't play dumb with me?”
“I think you are too tired and need to sleep this off”. He took Sarah's hand in his and brushed past me.
I watched them as they both went upstairs, hand in hand. His hands were wrapped tightly around hers, and she clung to him like he was her lifeline.
“Ahhhhhh”
My scream was so loud, I was sure the neighbours heard.
✖✖✖✖✖✖
Three days later, it was the night of the annual family dinner held at my father's place. Though this was the last place I wanted to be, I still found myself here.
Zeke was running late. Sarah, too.
We were about to start eating when they both walked in, Zeke’s hand around her waist, and she leaned into him, like he was her protector.
The food in front of me all of a sudden looked like puke, and I pushed it away from me.
I looked up to my dad, expecting him to say something, either about their lateness or why they were together in the first place.
Nothing. He said nothing.
My eyes flicked over to where Sarah's mom, my stepmother, sat, to see if she would say anything too.
No. A slight smile was even on her lips.
After they had both sat, Zeke cleared his throat while Sarah spoke.
“We are sorry for arriving late. But, we have news to share.”
My heart dropped in my chest, and began beating erratically.
“Can't it wait till after dinner, Sarah?” My father said, exasperatedly.
“It can. But, it's better to just share the news now so that dinner will be a celebratory one onwards.”
The smile on her face was so bright that it almost blinded me. And judging by the small smile on Zeke’s face too, the news in question was probably about them.
“Okay, then”, he pushed his plate forward a bit and rested his chin on his knuckles. “Spill.”
If it was possible, her smile brightened further as she turned to Zeke before holding his hands in hers.
“We are getting married.”
