Chapter 28 From my living room window, my eyes follow the mini-blizzard underway outside. Six-foot snow-tornados twirl down the street until the division between asphalt, sidewalks, and lawns disappear. Across the way, my neighbours gather in their living room. Two figures on a sofa, two children racing back and forth past the huge window. Lights from the TV flash into the room, softening the muted shadows on the walls. I draw the blinds tight, lower the thermostat to eighteen. Determined work is what I need, I return to my computer on the desk in the corner of the kitchen, sit down, click on the Warner investigation. When I open the top drawer of my desk, spot the mickey of whiskey, I don't stop to question, but pour two ounces in the empty glass left over from the night before. I take
