Chapter 33 Ten minutes before noon, sounds of boots hoofing it down the hallway echoes through the building as the meeting in the conference room of the detachment disbands. Thirty-seven task force members from District sweep pass the Homicide's glass double doors on their way to the side door exit. I look back at the door as the lead investigator stops to talk with Superintendent Malden, the visiting superintendent from E-Division in Vancouver, and Lacroix. The superintendent from E-Division says something. They all look at Lacroix, who shakes his head. Their inanimate expressions and weary stances tell me that what transpired during the meeting did little to point towards a suspect in the hunt for the missing and murdered off Highway 16.
