DECLAN
Every problem we encounter in life has more to do with us than the world itself. The world is ever ready to welcome and show love to us. Hardly do we ever do the same.
Take a look at how the plants grow. A seed will germinate if it is well attended to, regardless of who the sower is. Whether he be white, brown or black, is no business of nature.
I was sitting on the top of the tallest building in the werewolf territory. It was two storeys taller than any other building around. I revered the calm and serenity I got while staying there. It was a wonder many of them didn't come here at all.
One of my favourite things to do was to watch the sky. I loved observing the sunrise and sunset. I've loved doing so since I was little and I think I influenced Ashley to fall in with nature too. She too was a lover of the beautiful sky. If she still lived, I could bet that she was lying somewhere admiring the sky and taking in all of its beauty.
Oh jeez! I hated that some voice in my head kept telling me they were gone. I didn't want to believe it, hence my making a deal with Shawn. What I wasn't sure of was whether I had genuine hopes of seeing them someday or I was barely trying to clear my conscience, if that made any sense. Whatever it was, I hoped I was wrong and that they were safe and cosy somewhere.
A man can dream.
I took my attention back to the beauty above. Most of the clouds I could see were clear and some of them floated across the sky. The sky was quite colourful today and that even made the sight more admirable. Some parts seemed yellow, orange, and of course, the different shades of blue. The sun wasn't out today and I figured that explained the beautiful colours I could see. I also loved that I could look at the sun without having it disturb my eyes.
Beauty was, indeed, all around us.
“She told me to give you this after she has left,” Callum said, handing over a tiny slip of paper to me.
“Who's the ‘she’?” I inquired, smiling at the young werewolf.
“The witch,” he replied. “She's really nice.”
Not to me, I pondered.
Callum left me a moment later, making his way down the building with one powerful jump.
Gently, I straightened the paper and saw the words “I’m sorry” that appeared to have been written hastily. Wait . . . does this mean she believes me? She believes me now! This was exceptionally good news. At least I could sleep knowing she wasn't spending every moment of her life hating on me. This was a huge relief. While I couldn't ever act on my feelings for her, at least I knew she didn't hate me anymore.
“You know, I spend many hours here,” Shawn said, sitting beside me.
“I can see why, the view from here is not bad at all.”
“Yeah, it helps me think too. It's like the whole world just—”
I cut in. “Pauses and a sort of calm take over and even though you have more time to think of all your problems, everything, for some inexplicable reason, seems to feel less sad and just feel better overall.”
Shawn looked at me, his brows raised and his eyes fully opened. “Couldn't have worded it better.”
I changed the topic. “You do know that if the demons come here, we are all dead.”
Shawn shook his head in denial. “No, I disagree. We will be victorious.”
“You don't believe that, do you?”
“I have to.”
Landon was another issue altogether. He was a sick minded motherf*cker but there was one thing I couldn't take from him. The man was quite a genius and that made my fear of him increase. I know I could probably take him if we fought but that's only if he wasn't yet aware of my demonic nature. As long as Landon was still alive and breathing, I would never consider myself safe.
Shawn cleared his throat and shot a question at me. “Just me being curious here. Do you really think you can find your friends alive?”
“Yes, I'm sure," I responded. “I will see them again, I'll make sure of that.”
I had to remain positive. No matter how I felt.
I think it was fair to say that normalcy was forever a thing of the past. I couldn't see how life could get back to how it was. Even the best of dreamers couldn't pull this off. The world has lost billions of innocent lives and whatever we considered as victory was nothing compared to our loss. I guess this was it for Earth. Maybe the demons will be the only ones on the planet when they succeed in killing us all.
I left the top of the building to Shawn, who was buried in his thoughts. The dude needed calmness more than me at the moment. I was about to go out for a walk when I saw an old werewolf, sitting on a mat on one of the porches of a detached bungalow, not very far from where I was.
I went to sit beside her and in no time, we began chatting. Her name was Asa and she was once a big deal in terms of hierarchy in the werewolf tradition. She told me that she was once the alpha of a pack, several years ago but later passed the leadership to her younger brother long before the apocalypse emerged.
I told her of my fears and that the world was going to crumble on the few lives left in it.
I flung my hands in the air in frustration. “The demons are too powerful and when they do come for us, which they will, then that's it.”
“It's hard to see the light when you're in the storm," Asa said.
“What if there's no light in the storm? What if we are all doomed?”
“My late grandmother used to say that there's always a silver lining, whether we see it or not.”
I stood and stretched my hands behind me. “Your grandmother didn't witness the apocalypse, did she?”
Asa did something between a shrug and a wave. Yeah, she somehow managed to pull that off.
Asa was old so she wasn't thinking right anymore. There was no hope for anyone. This was something we all knew would happen, but for some reason, we decided to believe that somehow, it'll be averted. The demons have finally decided to end everyone. . .even the vampires have everything to be worried about.
The saddest part was that there was nothing to do. We couldn't do anything. There was no fighting back. If Rochu and Ashley were out there, the demon could have gotten to them and if that was the case, they were as good as dead.
It happened. Just at that moment. I hadn't even gone three steps away from Asa when I heard the sound. It was the sound of all the fences pulling out of the ground and shooting into the sky. As if that wasn't enough drama, the buildings—every damn building—began to shake, crumble, and then turn into ask. Don't ask how, because I can't tell. I saw the whole damn thing yet I'm not sure I can explain one damn thing.
Some werewolves began to help others who were buried under the layers of thick ashes. It was mainly the kids that were affected by the crumbling of the building as the adult werewolves could take a few blocks crumbling on them.
Shawn, Eve and Mike had already assembled the fighters. It was going to be a very long day.
The long awaited attack of the demons has finally come, and boy did they come in a “grand” way. They clearly didn't come to play.
