The Crown’s Choice

Chapter 21 – The morning sun bathed the palace in molten gold, but the air was heavy with anticipation, with doubt, with destiny. Liana stood beside Queen Amara at the royal council for the first time, the weight of a thousand gazes pressing down on her. Every noble in the room watched her some with awe, others with suspicion. Whispers slithered through the hall like snakes. Queen Amara rose from her throne. “You have all heard the truth,” she declared, her voice firm. “The child I lost has returned. This is Princess Liana of Elarion my daughter and rightful heir.” A murmur rippled across the chamber. One of the old councilors sneered. “Your Majesty, how do we know this isn’t an impostor, seeking to claim what isn’t hers?” Liana’s pulse raced. For a moment, she wanted to disappear but then she caught Damian’s eyes across the room, steady and unwavering. She straightened her back. “I have no desire to steal anything,” she said softly. “I only wish to serve this kingdom, whether it welcomes me or not.” The council fell silent. In that moment, the forgotten daughter became more than a rumor. She became a presence calm, brave, and real. Chapter 22 – The Enemy Within That night, thunder rolled across the skies, though no storm came. Liana sat by her window, staring into the restless darkness. A whispering unease crawled beneath her skin. She rose quietly, her silk robe brushing the marble floor, and stepped into the corridor. The palace torches flickered, their flames bowing to an unseen wind. Then movement. A shadow glided across the hall, cloaked and silent. Liana’s breath caught. She followed, heart pounding. The figure slipped into the council room and left a sealed envelope on the queen’s chair. When the intruder turned, their eyes met but before she could speak, the figure vanished into the darkness. With trembling hands, she opened the letter. A single message burned on the page: “The kingdom that welcomes the forgotten child will fall by its own crown.” Her heart froze. She whispered to the empty room, “They’re coming for us… for me. Chapter 23 – Damian’s Promise By dawn, the rumor had spread. Servants whispered. Courtiers avoided her gaze. Liana sat in the palace garden, the world spinning too fast. Damian approached quietly, his armor gleaming faintly in the morning light. “You’ve been crying,” he said softly. She looked away. “If I hadn’t returned, none of this would be happening. I brought the storm to your kingdom.” He knelt beside her, taking her trembling hands into his. “You didn’t bring the storm, Liana. You are the calm in it. Don’t ever forget that.” She looked into his eyes fierce, gentle, and full of unspoken love. “And what if this ends in war?” “Then we face it together,” he replied without hesitation. “I would rather fight by your side than live a thousand years without you.” For the first time, her heart found peace in the middle of chaos. Chapter 24 – The Queen’s Confession Queen Amara summoned Liana privately. The queen looked older that day not in years, but in guilt. “My daughter,” she began, her voice trembling. “The truth is heavier than I ever imagined.” Liana’s heart raced. “Tell me, Mother. Please.” “I was forced to give you away,” Amara said, tears glistening in her eyes. “The high priests warned me your birth would bring darkness to our land. I was young… afraid. I believed them.” Liana’s breath caught. “So you left me to grow up as no one?” The queen nodded, voice breaking. “And every day, I regretted it. I prayed to see your face again. I thought my sin would bury me before it brought you home.” Liana reached out, tears streaming. “You didn’t lose me forever, Mother. I came back.” They embraced a moment soft and raw, soaked in forgiveness. The walls that years had built between them finally began to crumble. Chapter 25 – Betrayal at Dusk The palace erupted in screams before sunset. Flames burst from the council wing, thick smoke curling into the twilight sky. Liana ran through the corridors, calling Damian’s name. Guards rushed past her, shouting orders. Through the haze, she saw him — Damian, sword drawn, protecting the queen. But beside the attackers, she saw a face that stopped her heart. “Marcus?” she gasped. Her friend her protector stood with the enemy, eyes full of pain. “I had no choice,” he shouted. “They have my family!” The moment shattered something in her. The fire reflected in his tears before he disappeared into the chaos. Liana sank to her knees, heart breaking. Even loyalty could be stolen when love was used as a weapon. Chapter 26 – The Storm Over Elarion By morning, the kingdom had turned into a fortress. Soldiers lined the walls. The air stank of smoke and fear. Liana worked tirelessly in the infirmary, binding wounds, whispering prayers over soldiers who might not see the next dawn. Damian visited her often, though exhaustion painted his face. “You shouldn’t be here,” he told her. “And leave them?” she replied softly. “They need more than swords. They need hope.” He smiled faintly. “Then I suppose I’ll stay close. Hope should never be unguarded.” That night, as rain finally broke the clouds, Liana lifted her face to the sky. “If this is my purpose,” she whispered, “then I will not run from it.” Chapter 27 – The Prisoner’s Truth They caught an enemy messenger that week. Queen Amara allowed Liana to question him herself. The dungeon smelled of damp earth and despair. The man’s lips curled into a mocking grin as she entered. “Do you even know what you are?” he sneered. Liana steadied herself. “I know I am my mother’s daughter.” He laughed bitterly. “You are more than that. You are the key to Elarion’s fall. The prophecy speaks of a queen born under fire who will burn her own crown.” Her stomach twisted. “Who sent you?” The man leaned forward, voice a whisper of venom. “Lord Hadrian… your father’s most trusted advisor.” The name struck her like lightning. Betrayal ran not from enemies, but from within the palace itself. Chapter 28 – Flames of Destiny The war reached the palace gates before dawn. Trumpets blared. Arrows darkened the sky. Damian rode at the front, armor gleaming, courage burning in his eyes. Liana watched from the balcony, every heartbeat a prayer. But when the gates broke, she refused to hide. “Your Highness!” a guard shouted. “It’s too dangerous!” She lifted her chin. “So is silence.” Grabbing a bow, she joined the fight not as a princess, but as a warrior. Each arrow she loosed carried her determination, her love, her defiance. By her side, Damian fought fiercely. And when the battle turned, it wasn’t the army that saved Elarion it was the sight of their forgotten princess leading the charge. Chapter 29 – The Price of Peace At last, silence fell. Smoke curled above the ruined fields. Liana ran across the battlefield, searching — until she saw him. Damian lay wounded, his armor torn, his chest rising faintly. “No, no, no…” she whispered, kneeling beside him. He smiled weakly. “I told you I’d protect you.” Her tears fell onto his cheek. “And I told you not to get hurt doing it.” He reached up, brushing her face. “If love is pain… then this was worth every wound.” Her sob echoed in the dawn. Peace had come, but it demanded too high a price. Chapter 30 The Rise of the Forgotten Daughter Weeks passed. The kingdom began to heal walls rebuilt, hearts slowly mended. On the day of her coronation, Liana stood before the people, her gown shimmering like dawn itself. Queen Amara placed the crown gently on her head, her eyes full of tears. “My daughter,” she whispered. “The light we lost has returned.” Liana turned to the crowd. “Once, I was a girl forgotten by my own blood. But I’ve learned that love can heal what time and fear destroyed. Elarion does not stand because of power but because of forgiveness.” The bells rang across the valley. The people bowed, their cheers rising like wind. And somewhere in the shadows, Damian watched alive, scarred, but smiling. Their eyes met, and in that single look, they said everything words could not. The forgotten daughter had become a queen not born of privilege, but of pain, faith, and love.
