Chapter : 3 "A Friendship Blossoms: Unexpected Bonds and Surprising Gestures"
As school ended, we walked home together. Along the way, he suddenly spoke up, expressing gratitude. I simply nodded and then broached the topic of the rumors circulating about him. With a soft smile, he acknowledged his awareness of the rumors. "Does it bother you?" I inquired. He replied calmly, attributing others' fear of him to the rumors. "It's not only the rumors," I interjected. Confused, he responded with a quizzical "huh?" signifying his confusion. I sighed, continuing, "The way you look at them, your perpetually grumpy expression—it doesn't convey kindness or friendliness." Aware of my shortcomings in friendliness, I delivered the critique, prompting him to ponder my words. Sensing his contemplation, I changed the subject, and soon we arrived home.
The next day, as I stepped out of the house for school, I was greeted by an unusual sight: a boy with oversized glasses and impeccably styled hair, giving off an elderly vibe despite wearing a school uniform. He flashed a wide smile at me, prompting my confusion and disbelief. Finally, he spoke, noting my early arrival compared to the day before. Despite his altered appearance, I recognized his voice as Jeremiah's.
"Jeremiah?" I questioned, puzzled by his transformation. "Uh, um, yeah," he confirmed, slightly taken aback by my reaction. "Is that you?" I pressed further, trying to contain my laughter. "Why are you..." he began, but I couldn't hold back my amusement, interrupting him with giggles. "Why did you dress up like that?" I continued, struggling to maintain a serious tone. He looked slightly crestfallen as he explained, "Yesterday you told me to have the appearance of a kind person," cheeks flushing with embarrassment.
"So you dressed up like that?" I teased, unable to suppress another bout of laughter. "Shut up!" he shot back, his cheeks turning an even deeper shade of red. "What made you think a kind and friendly look like this?" I prodded gently, finding his effort both amusing and endearing. "All the kind guys at my previous school looked like this. It's a good-guy hairstyle," he replied, gesturing to his hair. Despite my amusement, I couldn't help but find his attempt at transformation cute, leading to another fit of laughter that left my stomach sore.
After finally composing myself, we made our way to school. As we arrived, all eyes turned to us once more, but this time, the stares were accompanied by looks of confusion. Suppressing the urge to laugh, we proceeded to our respective spots. Soon enough, the teacher arrived, signaling the start of the day's lessons.
The day progressed without any remarkable events, following its usual routine. The only notable occurrence was the teacher's announcement about the upcoming school sports event, scheduled to take place after the first term examinations, which were just a month away. I observed Jeremiah interacting with some classmates and noticed how his new appearance seemed to make a positive impression on others, despite his awkwardness in conversations. His responses were always brief, but I couldn't help finding his social clumsiness both amusing and endearing. However, I quickly snapped out of my reverie, giving myself a mental shake and a physical slap on the cheek to stop dwelling on such trivial thoughts. "What am I even thinking?" I scolded myself silently, refocusing my attention on the tasks at hand.
As the school day wrapped up, Jeremiah and I began our usual trek home, while Zorini hopped on the bus due to her tiredness. Along the way, I asked Jeremiah why he didn't take the bus for a more comfortable journey. "I prefer walking," he replied simply. Letting out a sigh, I questioned his choice. "Plus," he added, "I like walking with you." His unexpected response caught me off guard, and I awkwardly mumbled, "Oh?" He nodded, and I teased, "Well, at least you've stopped teasing me with silly excuses." We shared a laugh as we reached our houses, bidding each other goodbye for the day.
Later that evening, I hit the books hard, determined to ace the upcoming exams. Dad had promised to reward my efforts with a manga book from Aizawl. Though he offered to take me there himself, I declined due to my aversion to crowds.
As I stepped out of the house in the morning, I spotted Jeremiah standing in front of our house, sporting his usual appearance—no thick glasses or peculiar hairstyle. "Back to normal, I see," I teased him, eliciting a soft chuckle from him. "I did look stupid, didn't I?" he asked with a hint of self-awareness. "Yeah, you did!" I replied honestly as we set off for school together.
On our way to school, we encountered Zorini in front of a local shop, her expression serious. Upon seeing us, she hurried over and excitedly shared news about a lucky ticket that only cost 5 rupees.
I expressed my opinion to Zorini, deeming the lucky ticket venture a waste of time. However, to my surprise, Jeremiah expressed his interest in participating as well. As we waited eagerly for Jeremiah's turn, the shopkeeper revealed his ticket, which displayed a prize—a beautiful hair clip. None of us had anticipated this outcome. Zorini burst into laughter at Jeremiah's unexpected win and promptly proceeded to purchase another round of lucky tickets.
As we waited for Zorini to make her selection, she was so engrossed that it took her quite some time to choose just one ticket. Jeremiah handed me the hair clip he had won and said, "Here, take it." Confused, I accepted the hair clip, and he could see my perplexity. He explained that he was giving me the hair clip as a gift. Uttering a surprised and confused "Uh, thank you," I placed the hair clip in my pocket.
Once Zorini was satisfied with her lucky ticket purchase, we resumed our journey to school.
As soon as we arrived at school, the bell rang, signaling the start of classes. Zorini's indulgence in the lucky ticket charm had caused us to arrive just in time. We took our seats, and the teacher entered the classroom, commencing the first lesson of the day. Nothing extraordinary occurred during class, except for Jeremiah forming new friendships and gaining popularity among his peers. It was inevitable considering his tall and handsome appearance. I sighed inwardly, realizing that popularity often came effortlessly to those like Jeremiah. Despite this, I remained focused on solving math equations. While I wasn't one to obsess over books and studies, the promise of a reward motivated me to give my best effort.
As the class came to an end, Jeremiah approached me with a question about my habit of studying during lunch breaks. I explained to him about my father's offer and why I was committed to studying diligently. Curiously, he inquired further, asking, "So you won't go to Aizawl?" I simply nodded in response. He pressed on, his expression curious as he asked why again. With a sigh, I confessed, "I dislike crowded places, and besides, I'm unfamiliar with the route to the manga bookstore. If my dad goes alone, he'll find it faster."
To my surprise, Jeremiah revealed, "I know a shop that sells manga." He paused, meeting my gaze directly before continuing, "If you'd like, I can show you the way. Perhaps we could go together." His cheeks flushed slightly, and I was momentarily taken aback. I was on the verge of refusing when I caught sight of his hopeful expression, his eyes shining with anticipation. Unable to resist, I found myself accepting his offer. My heart skipped a beat at the earnest look in his eyes, making it impossible for me to decline.
After reaching home, I headed straight to my room, holding onto the hair clip Jeremiah had given me. Reflecting on the day's events, I couldn't help but think about the strange yet comfortable bond I shared with Jeremiah. Despite the occasional awkwardness, there was something oddly reassuring about being around him. He had a way of surprising me with unexpected gestures, leaving me both puzzled and intrigued.
In the days leading up to the exam, life fell into a familiar rhythm. There were no remarkable occurrences, just the usual routine punctuated by moments of laughter shared with Jeremiah. It felt as though his presence had unlocked a new facet of my personality, one I hadn't realized existed.
