Chapter 14: The Choice That Changed Everything I walked away, but every step felt like I was ripping out a piece of myself. Janelle stood frozen in place, caught between the past and the present. Between Zane and me. And maybe that was the real problem—maybe I had never been enough to make her stop questioning. Maybe she had never fully closed the door on him. But I couldn’t let myself think that way. Not yet. I kept walking, my hands clenched into fists. If she needed to make a choice, she needed to make it without me standing there, waiting like a fool. I wasn’t going to beg her to stay. Love shouldn’t need begging. Then, just as I reached the coffee shop doors, I heard it. "Kiefer!" Her voice—desperate, breaking, filled with something I couldn’t quite place. I stopped. Slowly, I turned around, afraid to hope, afraid to believe that maybe, just maybe… She was running toward me, tears in her eyes. She didn’t look at Zane. She didn’t hesitate. And when she reached me, she threw her arms around my neck, holding on like she was terrified I would slip away. "I'm sorry," she whispered against my shoulder. "I should’ve never hesitated." My heart pounded so hard I thought it would break through my chest. I pulled back slightly, searching her face. “Are you sure?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Because if you choose me, Janelle, there’s no going back.” She nodded, her hands gripping my hoodie tightly. “It was never about choosing between you and Zane. It was about choosing myself. And I choose a life where I don’t let fear control me anymore. A life where I love who I love, without questioning it. And that’s you, Kiefer. It’s always been you.” A sharp exhale left my lips, relief crashing into me like a wave. I held her face in my hands, brushing away her tears. “Then that’s all I needed to hear.” And then, without another word, I kissed her. It wasn’t just any kiss. It was the kind of kiss that sealed a promise, the kind that spoke of every emotion we had been afraid to say out loud. A kiss that told her, I love you. I always have. I always will. When we finally broke apart, Zane was gone. Maybe he had realized he never stood a chance. Janelle let out a shaky breath, her forehead resting against mine. “So, what now?” she whispered. I smiled, pressing a soft kiss to her temple. “Now? We figure out how to make this work. Together.” Because love wasn’t about waiting for the perfect moment. It was about choosing each other, over and over again, no matter what twists life threw our way. And as long as we had each other, I knew we’d find our way. --- The End.
