Special Chapter: The Night We Almost Lost Each Other The wind howled outside, rain tapping against the window like a steady drumbeat. Janelle and I sat in my car, parked outside her apartment, the tension between us thick enough to suffocate. We had just come from a party—one of those wild campus nights where everyone pretended their problems didn’t exist for a few hours. But tonight, we couldn’t pretend. Janelle sat with her arms crossed, staring straight ahead. I gripped the steering wheel, trying to keep my emotions in check. "Just say it," I muttered, my voice tight. She exhaled sharply. "Say what, Kiefer? That I feel like you’re slipping away from me? That every time we’re together, it feels like you’re somewhere else?" My jaw clenched. "That’s not fair." "Then tell me what’s going on!" she snapped, finally turning to look at me. Her eyes, usually so full of warmth, were clouded with frustration and pain. I ran a hand through my hair, debating whether to tell her the truth. But I had never been good at pretending with Janelle, so I finally let it out. “I got an offer.” Her brows furrowed. “An offer for what?” I hesitated. “To play professionally. In Spain.” Silence. I didn’t dare look at her, but I felt the shift in the air. "For how long?" she finally asked, her voice small. "Three years. Maybe more." I heard her sharp intake of breath. “And you weren’t going to tell me?” “I didn’t know how,” I admitted. “I didn’t want to hurt you.” She let out a bitter laugh. “So what, you were just going to leave one day and text me from the airport?” “No, of course not!” I turned to her, frustration bubbling inside me. “I just—Janelle, I didn’t want to see this look on your face. The look that makes me feel like I’m the villain for chasing my dreams.” Tears welled in her eyes. “You think I don’t want you to chase your dreams? Kiefer, I love you. But how am I supposed to be okay knowing you’re about to leave for three years?” I reached for her hand, but she pulled away. That hurt more than I could admit. “Janelle—” She shook her head, her voice trembling. “I can’t do this right now. I need time to think.” And with that, she opened the door and stepped out into the rain. I watched her disappear inside, my chest tightening painfully. For the first time since we met, I felt like I was truly losing her. And I had no idea how to stop it. --- Special Chapter: A Love Letter Never Sent Janelle’s Journal Entry Dear Kiefer, I don’t know if I’ll ever show you this, but I need to write it down, or I might break apart. I’m scared. Not of losing you, because I know love isn’t about possession. I’m scared that we’ll become one of those stories—two people who love each other but are forced apart by life. I hate that I can’t be selfish. I hate that I can’t ask you to stay when I know you belong on that court, making your dreams come true. But most of all, I hate that no matter how much it hurts, I will always be the one who loves you enough to let you go. Maybe love isn’t always about happy endings. Maybe sometimes, it’s about the moments in between. The laughter, the late-night talks, the way you look at me like I’m the only person in the world. If this is all we get, then I’ll be grateful for every second. But if there’s even the smallest chance that we find our way back to each other one day… I’ll wait. Forever yours, Janelle --- Special Chapter: The Reunion That Changed Everything Three Years Later The stadium was packed. The crowd roared, the energy electric. I stood near the court, heart pounding as I watched Kiefer move across the hardwood like he was born for it. Stronger. Faster. More confident than ever. He had made it. And so had I. Three years apart had changed us, but it hadn’t broken us. I had gone to New York, chased my dreams, built the life I had always wanted. But no matter how much I achieved, a part of me was always waiting. Waiting for him. The buzzer sounded, signaling the end of the game. Kiefer’s team had won. He threw his arms in the air, his teammates rushing to him in celebration. But then, something unexpected happened. His eyes found me in the crowd. And in that moment, time stopped. He froze, his expression unreadable. Then, without hesitation, he broke away from the team, running straight toward me. Before I could process it, he was in front of me, breathing hard, sweat dripping down his face. “You came,” he whispered, almost like he didn’t believe it. Tears burned my eyes as I nodded. “I told you I would.” He stared at me for a long second before letting out a shaky laugh. “Do you know how long I’ve waited to see you again?” I swallowed hard. “Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to run back to you?” The crowd faded. The noise disappeared. And then, just like that, Kiefer pulled me into his arms and kissed me—like no time had passed at all. Like we had never been apart. Like we had always been meant to find our way back. And maybe, just maybe, this was our real beginning. --- The End.
