Chapter 5: The Walls Begin to Crumble As the tutoring sessions continued, Kiefer realized something strange—he actually liked spending time with Janelle. What started as a bet became the highlight of his day. Janelle, on the other hand, found herself lowering the walls she had carefully built. Kiefer wasn’t just a jock—he was surprisingly thoughtful. He paid attention to the little things, like how she always chewed on her pen when thinking or how she hummed softly when she solved a problem. One evening, as they sat in the library, Kiefer stared at her instead of his math textbook. “You know, you’re kind of amazing,” he said out of nowhere. Janelle blinked, caught off guard. “What?” “You’re smart, funny, and you don’t care what people think. It’s… cool.” She rolled her eyes. “Flattery won’t get you out of this equation.” But her heart was beating a little faster. Neither of them noticed Jake watching from across the library, smirking to himself. --- Chapter 6: The Unraveling Truth Kiefer was in trouble. He had fallen for Janelle, and the bet felt like a weight on his chest. He wanted to tell her the truth, but every time he tried, the fear of losing her stopped him. Meanwhile, Janelle found herself enjoying Kiefer’s presence more than she wanted to admit. When he wasn’t around, she actually missed him. That realization scared her. But the truth always finds a way out. One afternoon, Janelle overheard a conversation that made her blood run cold. Jake was laughing with some of the basketball players. “Man, I can’t believe Kiefer is actually pulling this off. Who would’ve thought Janelle Carter would fall for the bet?” Janelle’s heart shattered. A bet. That’s all it was. --- Chapter 7: The Heartbreak Janelle didn’t show up for their tutoring session that evening. Or the next. Kiefer knew something was wrong. When he finally saw her outside the library, he rushed to her. “Janelle, hey! What’s going on?” She turned, eyes cold. “So, was it fun? Tricking the nerdy girl? Making me believe this was real?” His stomach dropped. “Janelle, I—” “I know about the bet, Kiefer.” Her voice wavered, but she held her ground. “You won. Congratulations.” Kiefer panicked. “No, it’s not like that! It started as a bet, but it’s real now. You mean something to me.” She shook her head, stepping back. “I was just another game to you.” And with that, she walked away, leaving him standing there with regret crashing down on him. --- Chapter 8: The Grand Gesture For weeks, Janelle avoided Kiefer. She buried herself in books, refusing to let herself feel the pain. But Kiefer wasn’t about to give up. One afternoon, as Janelle sat in the library, a commotion outside caught her attention. Students were gathering, whispering excitedly. Curious, she stepped outside—only to freeze. Kiefer was standing in the middle of campus, holding a giant sign that read: "I MESSED UP. BUT I LOVE YOU." Janelle’s breath hitched. Kiefer spotted her and grabbed a megaphone. “Janelle Carter, I was an i***t. Yes, it started as a bet, but I fell for you—hard. And I don’t care if the whole campus knows it.” The crowd watched in stunned silence. Janelle’s heart warred with her mind. Could she trust him? Then Kiefer held up something—her favorite book. The one she had been reading when they first met. “I read it,” he said softly. “Because I wanted to understand you.” Tears welled in her eyes. He remembered. Slowly, she stepped forward. “You really read it?” He nodded. “Twice.” Janelle exhaled, a small smile breaking through. “You’re such a dork.” Kiefer grinned. “Does that mean I’m forgiven?” She rolled her eyes but grabbed his hand. “I’m still mad. But yeah.” The crowd erupted in cheers as Kiefer pulled her into his arms, whispering, “I won’t mess up again.” And Janelle knew—this time, he meant it.
