Chapter 8: The Real Plot Twist Janelle wasn’t the type to forgive easily, and Kiefer knew it. Even though she had taken his hand that day, he still had to prove himself. So he did. For the next few weeks, Kiefer went out of his way to show Janelle he was serious. He left sticky notes in her locker with nerdy math jokes, brought her coffee during late-night study sessions, and even started reading more books—just so he could talk to her about them. Slowly, Janelle's heart softened. But then, something unexpected happened. One evening, as Kiefer was walking across campus, he overheard Jake talking to some teammates. “I still can’t believe Kiefer actually fell for her,” Jake scoffed. “It was just a bet, but now he’s acting like she’s the love of his life.” Kiefer clenched his jaw. “Excuse me?” Jake turned, smirking. “Come on, man. It was just a game.” Kiefer stepped forward. “No, it wasn’t. Maybe it started that way, but Janelle is the best thing that ever happened to me. And if you can’t see that, then I don’t need you in my life.” Jake rolled his eyes. “Dude, you were never serious about her before. What changed?” Kiefer smiled. “I did.” --- Chapter 9: The Hidden Truth A few days later, Kiefer found Janelle sitting under a tree, reading. He sat beside her, heart racing. “There’s something I need to tell you,” he said. Janelle looked up. “What is it?” He hesitated before sighing. “I found out something about that bet. Jake—he never thought I could win you over. He just wanted to humiliate both of us.” Janelle’s eyes darkened. “So it wasn’t just a stupid dare? He was trying to make a joke out of me?” Kiefer nodded. “But the joke’s on him. Because I fell in love with you.” She stared at him, searching his face for any sign of a lie. But all she saw was sincerity. Then, to his surprise, she grinned. “What?” he asked. She leaned in, whispering, “Do you want to know something funny?” He raised an eyebrow. Janelle smirked. “I already knew about the bet before you told me.” Kiefer’s eyes widened. “Wait—what?” She laughed. “I overheard Jake talking about it weeks ago. I just wanted to see how long it would take you to admit it.” Kiefer blinked. “So you—wait, you played me?” Janelle shrugged, closing her book. “I wanted to see if you were worth it.” He stared at her in disbelief before bursting into laughter. “You’re unbelievable.” She smiled, standing up and holding out her hand. “And yet, you still love me.” Kiefer took her hand without hesitation. “Yeah, I do.” And as they walked away together, he realized—he may have started the game, but Janelle had won his heart from the very beginning. ---
