Chapter 10: The Goodbye That Wasn’t Meant to Happen Things had been perfect—almost too perfect. Janelle and Kiefer had defied the odds, proving that love could grow even in the most unexpected places. But life had a cruel way of reminding people that happiness wasn’t always permanent. One evening, as they sat under the same tree where they had shared so many moments, Janelle looked distant. Her fingers traced absent patterns in the grass, and her eyes, usually so full of warmth, were clouded with uncertainty. Kiefer noticed immediately. “What’s wrong?” She hesitated, then took a deep breath. “I got accepted into a study program abroad.” His heart clenched. “For how long?” She swallowed hard. “Two years.” The words hit him like a punch. “Two years?” He forced a chuckle, trying to mask the panic in his voice. “That’s nothing. We’ll make it work.” Janelle looked away. “Kiefer… I don’t think long distance is a good idea.” Silence. His chest tightened. “So that’s it? You’re just leaving?” She bit her lip, her own eyes welling up. “I don’t want to hold you back. You have your own dreams here. And I—” “You what?” His voice cracked. “You don’t love me enough to try?” Tears slipped down her cheeks. “I love you too much to ask you to wait.” Kiefer shook his head, running a hand through his hair. “Janelle, this isn’t fair. We just found each other.” She reached for his hand, squeezing it tightly. “And that’s why I have to let you go.” He wanted to argue, to tell her she was making a mistake. But deep down, he knew she had already made up her mind. So he did the hardest thing he had ever done—he let her walk away. And just like that, the love they had fought so hard for slipped through his fingers like sand. --- Chapter 11: Love Doesn’t Fade, It Waits The months that followed were unbearable. Kiefer threw himself into basketball, trying to forget. But every time he walked past the library or sat under their tree, the memories came rushing back. Janelle, on the other hand, drowned herself in studies, trying to convince herself she had done the right thing. But late at night, when the world was quiet, she found herself rereading their old texts, missing his voice, his laughter, his presence. Time passed, but the ache never faded. Until one day, two years later, fate decided to intervene once again. Kiefer was sitting in a coffee shop, absentmindedly flipping through a book—one of the ones Janelle had once recommended. And then, a familiar voice whispered from behind him. “You finally read it?” His heart stopped. Slowly, he turned around—and there she was. Janelle. Standing there, looking exactly the same yet somehow different, like time had changed her but love had kept her the same. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, with a small, hopeful smile, she asked, “Can we try again?” Kiefer exhaled shakily before standing up, closing the book. “I thought you’d never ask.” And this time, he wasn’t going to let her go. ---
