A dull, rhythmic beeping slowly pulled Isabella to consciousness, the sound reminding her of the shrill sound that filled her ears after the crash. Her chest tightened, panic clawing its way up her throat as the thought of still being trapped inside the overturned car flooded her mind.
Her eyelids slowly fluttered open to a bright white light that left her squinting.
The ceiling above her was unrecognizable, but she soon realized she wasn't in the ruins of her car.
She tried to move, but pain spread through her body so sharply that a gasp escaped her lips.
“Easy… easy.”
The voice was deep, strained, and achingly familiar. Isabella turned her head weakly, eager to see the face behind the voice.
“Daniel…?” she muttered softly, her voice hoarse.
Daniel Richford, Isabella's older brother, stood beside the bed, his usually polished appearance in complete disarray.
His tie was missing, the sleeves of his expensive shirt rolled up unevenly, and dark shadows ringed his bloodshot eyes. He looked like a man who had not slept in days.
The moment their gazes met, relief and pain flashed across his face so quickly it broke her heart.
“Bella.” His voice cracked as he reached for her hand carefully, as though she might shatter beneath his touch. “Thank God you are awake,” he breathed out.
Confusion clouded her mind as she realized her brother, whom she had not seen in person for the last five years, was suddenly in a hospital ward with her.
Questions flooded her mind, and she voiced them out, “Why are you here?” She asked, brows arched with curiosity.
Daniel forced a small smile before replying, “The hospital called, and I hurried down here as fast as I could…” he paused, heaving a shaky breath. “The hospital couldn't get a hold of your husband or his family.” He let out a scoff.
Isabella swallowed, unsure of what to do. She had spent five years defending the Willows, but in that moment, she had no words.
“How long have I been unconscious?” She asked instead.
“Three days,” Daniel replied to her surprise.
And then, everything came rushing in backwards, she recalled the crash, the truck, her eagerness to get to Aiden's office, and Dr Tera announcing her pregnancy results.
Isabella's heart suddenly swelled with anxiety…
Her baby!
Her eyes widened in terror as she struggled to sit up, ignoring the searing pain that tore through her ribs.
“My baby…”
“Bella, no.” Daniel quickly pressed a gentle hand to her shoulder. “Don’t move.”
“My baby!” Her voice rose into a desperate cry. “Daniel, where’s my baby? Is the baby okay? Tell me!”
His jaw clenched, Daniel said nothing, and his silence made fear wrap its icy fingers around Isabella’s heart.
“Calm down,” he said finally, forcing steadiness into his voice. “You need to calm down. I will get the doctor.”
“Daniel!” she sobbed, reaching for him weakly. “Don’t leave me… please tell me first! What happened to my baby?”
But he was already backing away, unable to hide the pain written all over his face.
“I’ll be right back,” he said, pulling the door open and disappearing behind it, leaving Isabella alone with her raving thoughts.
*No, no, no.*
She shook her head, staring at the ceiling as memories replayed in brutal flashes.
Her hands trembled as she reached for her stomach, pressing her fingers against it.
“My baby…”A sob tore from her throat, tears spilled instantly, as she felt the cold void within her.
“Please…” she whispered hoarsely. “Please still be there.”
She squeezed her eyes shut, praying harder than she ever had in her life.
Please God… take anything else, my pride, my strength, my happiness, but not my baby.
The child she had waited five years for, the child she had been racing to tell Aiden about, the child who had existed only for a few precious hours in her joy-filled heart.
Her chest heaved, lips trembling, *What if Aiden already knew?*
*What if he was outside?*
*Why wasn’t he here?*
*Why was Daniel the one beside her bed?*
Questions collided mercilessly in her mind.
Then the door opened again, and Daniel returned, this time with Dr. Tera and another older male doctor in blue scrubs.
The moment Isabella saw Dr. Tera’s face, her stomach dropped. The woman's eyes were soft, holding what she recognized all too well. Pity.
“No…” Isabella whispered before anyone spoke. “No…”
Dr. Tera moved to her bedside. “Mrs. Conway…”
“No!” Isabella cried, shaking her head wildly despite the pain. “Don’t look at me like that. Don’t you dare.”
Daniel turned away sharply, dragging a hand down his face.
Dr. Tera reached for Isabella’s trembling hand. “I’m so sorry.”
The room spun for Isabella, “No…”
“We did everything we could after the accident. You suffered severe trauma and internal bleeding.”
“No… no…”
“We were able to stabilize you…” Dr. Tera’s own voice wavered. “But we couldn’t save the baby.”
A scream ripped from Isabella's throat, raw and broken.
“Nooooo!”
She palmed her face, sobbing violently as pain tore through her body and soul.
Her baby, her miracle. Gone just like that. The child she had loved the second she heard of its existence… gone before she had even held it.
Daniel rushed forward, holding her as she shook uncontrollably. “No! Give my baby back! Give my baby back!”
“I’m sorry, Bella… I’m so sorry…”
But Isabella couldn't hear him, sinking into her world of grief.

“Are you sure you don't want to return home with me? Mother and Father would be glad to have you back.” Daniel offered Isabella as they stood outside the hospital's parking lot.
Four days had passed since Isabella regained consciousness, and no one but Daniel had been by her side, helping her accept the pain of losing her child all too soon.
Aiden hadn't shown up, but she understood the reason behind his absence. The hospital couldn't reach him because she was his secretary who handles every call going in, and her phone had been damaged in the accident, he would have known.
Isabella was confident these were the reasons Aiden never showed up at the hospital despite her seven-day absence, but Daniel wasn't having it.
Instead, he offered to take her home, to their mansion, away from the city.
“Thank you, Daniel, for coming over and taking care of me. But I just cannot abandon my family. Maybe someday, I will return with Aiden by my side.”
Daniel huffed, his jaw clenching, “Isabella…”
“Trust me, Daniel, I am happy here. Aiden is my love, my peace, my life. We just lost our baby, and we need to mourn the loss of our baby.”
Isabella knew she sounded crazy to her brother, and that was fine, he didn't need to understand. All she needed was his support, the same one he offered when he let her abandon her position and leave to date and eventually marry Aiden.
“Fine, but you call me as soon as you get home.” He opened his arms, pulling her in for a hug. “I promise I will call,” Isabella whispered against his chest before pulling back.
After bidding her brother farewell, she got into the cab she had booked, heading back to the Willow estate.
The moment Isabella walked into the Willow mansion, the air changed. It was quiet, too quiet, but then footsteps echoed through the living room.
Isabella swerved and found Aiden approaching her, looking as attractive and captivating as the first time they met.
“Aiden…” she trailed off as her husband stopped before her, his face void of emotions as he raised a brown envelope to meet Isabella's gaze.
Confused and curious at the same time, Isabella took the envelope, tearing it open, she pulled out the document and stared at it, her chest immediately constricting, and her mind descending into further confusion.
“Divorce?”
