Chapter 3

597 Words
Rowan actually ordered them to deny my anesthesia! My hollow heart twisted in fresh agony, the torment eclipsing even the raw, tearing pain below. As consciousness returned, the doctor who'd defended me earlier stared—his eyes shadowed, yet overflowing with pity. A bitter laugh escaped me. Even a stranger who'd known me for mere months showed compassion, while the man I'd loved for ten years couldn't care less if I bled out on this table. Hope flatlined. Three newborn wails pierced the air—then darkness swallowed me again. I awoke to empty arms. My babies were gone. No time for guilt. Dragging my ravaged body, I lurched from the hospital bed. Something primal roared inside me, urging me to find my baby right now. Blood dripped off me, painting a macabre trail across the tiles. Every step sent white-hot knives through my core, nearly buckling my knees. Just before my vision failed, I spotted my babies through the nursery window—and my heart iced over. Why only two? Tubes spiderwebbed their tiny bodies. Blood slithered through the plastic lines—the end of one tube was set to Lilith, the other was to her spoiled baby. My twins' faces were waxen, their cries thinner than a dying breath. Rage detonated in my chest. I crashed into the room, tore the tubes free with trembling hands. Don't hurt my babies— Before I could reach them, sharp fingers yanked my hair. Lilith's laugh told me she'd been waiting. She kicked me down easily, and her stiletto heel slammed my face into the floor, grinding my temple into the tiles. This was no fragile college girl. Her grip crushed my wrist like a vise—stronger than mine after years of street fights. "Maisie, you should be thanking me. Without my baby needing a fresh heart, you'd never have been pregnant with Rowan's kids." She deliberately let me see this scene. "All it took was... persuading him. Those ovulation injections he gave you were just to breed you like a broodmare for spare parts." "Trash will always be trash. If we weren't completely desperate, how could their tainted hearts ever be worthy of my precious baby? The thought makes me sick—so I had to end them both." With a cruel smile, Lilith placed her hand on one infant's tiny head. A little pressure was all it took—the baby's weak cries vanished instantly. "Lilith, I'll kill you!!" My whole body trembled with rage. How could she take a life so casually?! My eyes burned with tears of fury as I glared at her, my vision blurring red. My screams only excited her more. With a careless flick of her wrist, she dropped the other child right before my eyes. It wasn't even waist height... Yet the impact was horrific. The baby's tiny body hit the floor with a sickening crunch, reduced to a mangled heap. Warm blood splattered across my face. At that moment, the world went silent. My blood ran cold—then erupted into a burning rage. I tackled her to the floor with a guttural scream. But Lilith just laughed, her grin widening with twisted delight. Before I could grab her, a crushing blow sent me flying backward. As I struggled to focus, Lilith's face transformed into a mask of terrified innocence. She cried in panic, "Rowan! Help me! I just... I only brought Maisie's poor babies here to stay with our little one. But she flew into a rage! She swore she'd kill our baby first—then me!"
