“Looking at these results, Mr. Williams, I’m afraid it’s not good news,” Doctor Oakley said, sitting on the other side of the desk while peering over his horn-rimmed glasses.
Roger Williams shuffled in his chair and adjusted his posture upright against the leather backrest. He straightened his jacket and mentally prepared himself for what the doctor had to say. He drew in a deep, wheezing breath which caused a coughing fit. Roger gasped for air and regained his composure.
“Well, the test results suggest you have extensive small-cell lung cancer,” Dr. Oakley continued. “Unfortunately the cancer has spread to your bones as well. This means your body is fighting on two fronts and isn’t finding it easy.”
Roger closed his eyes as he absorbed the news
