Episode 8 — 4:20

1048 Words
Every light in the station turned red. For a moment, nobody moved. Then the clock changed. 4:20. The sound that followed wasn't loud. It was worse. A deep, almost inaudible hum passed through the station, through the walls, through the floor beneath Arin's feet. The c***k widened. The room below became clearer. A desk. A wooden chair. A small window. And a boy sitting alone. Young Arin. No— Arian. The child looked up at him. "You're late." Arin stared down through the opening. "How can you be there?" The child smiled. "How can you?" Arin had no answer. Kian grabbed his shoulder. "Don't listen to him." The child looked at Kian. "You always say that." Kian froze. "You remember me?" Arian laughed softly. "Of course." Mira stepped forward. "Arian." The child's smile vanished. "You shouldn't have come." Mira tightened her grip on the umbrella. "I had to." "No." Arian looked at Arin. "You brought him." Mira didn't answer. Arin looked between them. "What is happening?" Elias suddenly shouted: "Everyone away from the c***k!" The floor trembled. A dark line spread outward from the opening. Kian pulled Arin backward. Something began rising from below. Not a person. Not exactly. It looked like a mass of overlapping photographs, papers, and fragments of handwriting, twisting together as though an invisible wind were tearing through them. Names appeared across its surface. Hundreds of names. Then thousands. Some vanished immediately. Others remained. Arin recognized one. KIAN MALHOTRA. He reached toward it. "Don't!" Elias pulled him back. The name disappeared. Kian looked at Arin. "You almost brought me back." "Isn't that what we want?" "No." Kian's voice was barely audible. "Not like this." The mass began moving toward them. Mira stepped forward. "Arin, listen to me." He looked at her. "You said Arian divided himself." "Yes." "Why?" "Because the Ledger couldn't erase everything at once." "Then what are the four parts?" Mira looked at Kian. "Memory." Kian nodded. "Identity." Elias continued. "Will." Mira's eyes settled on Arin. "And the fourth..." She stopped. Arin waited. "What?" Mira whispered: "Choice." Arin looked at the child below. Arian was still sitting at the desk. "Which one am I?" Mira didn't answer. Arin's expression changed. "You don't know." "I know." "Then tell me." "You are the part that made the others possible." Arin frowned. "What does that mean?" Before she could answer, Arian stood up. The room below suddenly changed. The walls disappeared. Arin saw another place. A hospital corridor. A woman crying. A man arguing with someone. A little boy lying in a bed. Then— another memory. A school. A classroom. A birthday. A family dinner. A rainy playground. Each scene appeared for only seconds. Arin recognized all of them. His childhood. His memories. His life. But something was wrong. In every scene, there was an empty space beside him. Someone should have been there. Someone had been removed. Arin whispered: "Mira." She nodded. "You were there." "Why can't I remember?" "Because remembering me was dangerous." "To me?" "To everyone." Arian's voice came from below. "She's lying." Mira looked down. Arian was no longer smiling. "She didn't disappear because of you." Arin stared at him. "Then why?" "Because she chose to disappear." Mira's face went pale. Kian looked at her. "You never told us that." "I couldn't." "Why?" Mira looked at Arin. "Because if you knew, you'd try to bring me back." Arin stepped toward her. "And?" "And that would destroy the barrier." "What barrier?" "The one keeping them out." The mass behind them suddenly stopped moving. Every name on it disappeared. All except one. ARIN. The word began glowing. Elias looked horrified. "It's found him." "Who?" Arin asked. Elias didn't answer. A voice came from every speaker in the station. Calm. Emotionless. Almost human. "Return the fragment." Arin looked around. "Who are you?" "You know." "No." "You forgot." The red lights flickered. "You were never meant to return." Arian stood beneath the c***k. For the first time, he looked frightened. "Arin." Arin looked down. "Don't let them take your choice." "What choice?" Arian pointed toward the wall. A door had appeared there. It hadn't existed before. On it was the symbol of the Ledger. Four sections. Four empty spaces. Arin approached it. Mira shouted: "Don't open it!" He stopped. "Why?" "Because that's where you chose." "Where I chose what?" She looked at him. "Whether to become yourself." Silence. Arin placed his hand against the door. A memory exploded into his mind. He was younger. Arian stood before him. They were inside the same room. Four glowing symbols surrounded them. Arian was crying. "I can't save everyone." Young Arin answered: "Then save one." "Who?" Young Arin pointed toward the door. "Me." Arian stared at him. "You don't understand." "I do." "If I give you my memories, you'll forget who I am." "Then I'll remember again." "You might not." "Then I'll find you." The memory shattered. Arin pulled his hand away. He was breathing heavily. Mira was crying. Kian looked stunned. Elias lowered his head. Arin stared at them. "I chose this." Nobody answered. "I chose to forget." Mira nodded. "Yes." "Why?" "Because you were afraid." "Of what?" Mira looked toward the red lights. "Of becoming him." Arin looked down. Arian was gone. The room beneath the station was empty. Then a final message appeared on the door. MEMORY TWO COMPLETE. Arin stared at it. Another line appeared. ONE MEMORY REMAINS. Kian whispered: "What's the last memory?" Arin looked at him. "I don't know." Elias suddenly stepped backward. His face had gone pale. "I do." Everyone turned toward him. Elias looked at Arin. "The last memory isn't about Arian." "Then what is it about?" Elias swallowed. "It's about the day Kian disappeared." Arin froze. Mira closed her eyes. Kian whispered: "No." Arin looked between them. "What happened that day?" Nobody answered. Then the station announcement system crackled. A familiar voice spoke. Kian's voice. But Kian was standing beside Arin. The recording said: "Arin, if you're hearing this, don't trust Elias." Elias closed his eyes. The recording continued. "He was the one who erased me." Silence. Arin slowly turned toward Elias. Elias didn't deny it. And for the first time since the investigation began— Arin realized he might have been trusting the wrong person all along.
