A lighthearted read about adventure, self-improvement, late romance, family struggles, peer pressure, ambitions, and life realization of a simple girl named Caroline Gerthig who spent almost a quarter of her life in their rural and old-fashioned town of Mount Carmel.
Young girls and blooming ladies can relate to Caroline when she thinks about adolescence, getting in a relationship, or asking herself if somebody would really admire her.
Drenched in the mud, her boots were almost giving up the farmwork at Mr. Baldwin's peach plantation. Caroline hastily wiped her dirty hands on her off-white apron. Was it really off-white or was it white before she started wearing them at the farm?
Caroline sighed and just carried a basket of plums and laid them on the carpet of wild grass under a tree for some shade against the scorching sun. The weather was crazy. Last time it was raining, now the sun starts to prick her almost tan skin.
She didn't know that she fell asleep dreaming of a lovely lady she always wanted to be, someday.
In her dream, she was wearing a long silvery silk gown, pretty red shoes, a sparkling tiara that highlighted her naturally golden-wavy hair. She was dancing inside a royal hall with a handsome prince who held her as if she was the most precious gem in the whole place.
"Caroline! Hurry up, you need to get those plums for Mr. Baldwin and get you some pennies so you can go to school tomorrow!"
She immediately rose from the grass and scratched her eyes. It was her mother. She needed to get going before she got another yelling!
Running downhill, Caroline couldn't forget what she dreamt of. It was surreal. Will it really happen? Could somebody admire her like the way the prince looked at her? She couldn't figure out the face of the man, but for sure, he was handsome!
Looking back, she saw a handful of pretty purple wildflowers. They were not yet in full bloom, yet their buds were promising as the tiny butterflies and bees circled around them.
She suddenly asked herself, "When do flowers bloom?"
