Chapter 3

Lucas The cool air whistled through the trees around us. I sat on the ground drinking my water and trying to recover a little before we went at it again. Training with Mason was the only time I could really push myself without fear of hurting him. His wolf had grown substantially as well, but not to the point of evolving like mine had. But today I wasn't focused like I should be and we both knew it. I was sloppy, making stupid mistakes and paying for it. “What has you so wound up today?” Mason asked, putting his water back on the ground beside him. I eyed him carefully and sighed. I needed to talk to him about it anyway. “I got a letter yesterday from the lycans. They want me to meet with them.” I admitted, maybe if I got this conversation over with I could get my head into training and stop wasting our time. “Did you tell them to get f****d?” He raised his eyebrows in question. “Pretty much, but I don’t think they will just go away politely,” I ran my hand through my hair, pushing it away from my face. “You’re probably right,” he said, taking a deep breath. He was just as worried about this as I am, not the reassurance that I was hoping for. I was hoping that maybe I was overreacting from everything we just went through and he would have a different perspective, though deep down I knew better. I really don't know what to expect, but it can't be good. “I think I may need to call a meeting with the local packs and update them on the situation in case we end up needing backup,” I told him and stood back up. My pack was strong, but standing against a pack of lycans would be difficult. “You know you always have anything you need from me,” he said as he stood as well. “I appreciate it. I have a feeling we are going to need all the help we can get here,” I told him as we made our way back over to the field we were training in. I wasted a lot of years being jealous of Mason. I never would have imagined he would end up being one of my best friends. “Hopefully not, but it is worth a conversation to give them a heads up,” he said, grabbing his escrima sticks. “Shift,” he said, nodding his head at me. I needed to learn to be more coordinated in fighting in my lycan form so I shifted and he came at me with the sticks while I tried to block each hit. “Have you. Talked to. The witches. To see. What assistance they. Can provide?” He asked between breaths as he continued to swing the sticks at me and I dodged and blocked the hits. “Not yet, I can have Willow attend the meeting with the alphas though,” I answered. It was still not even something that registered as an option to me right away as it did for him. Just like running into that house to get Esme without any of them, it could have been a deadly mistake. I need to work on relying on them as an ally. It’s why I have some of them living here and training with us, they were an invaluable asset and we needed to solidify our relationship with the coven. Alpha, we need you at the Southeast border. It's better if you see this yourself, Kyle’s link came through distracting me enough for Mason to get a good hit on my ribs. Wonderful, I’m on my way I linked back and backed away from Mason with my hands up indicating for him to stop before he whacked me with his sticks again. “We have to go, Kyle says there is a problem,” I said and turned to run. Mason shifted and stayed right by my side as we made our way to the other side of my pack territory. We walked up to find several warriors standing in a circle looking at something on the ground just outside of the border. Mason shifted back and they parted as we got closer, allowing us to see what they found. “Trevor found her,” Kyle says as I knelt down beside the girl lying in the dirt. She was coated with mud, her clothes were shredded around her body, barely covering her. She was covered with cuts and bruises. Her short blonde hair was caked with mud and blood. I shifted back to my human form and moved her hair from her face while listening for her heartbeat. Her face was swollen with two black eyes and a fat lip. Ba bump. It was weak but I could hear the light thumping of her heart. I scooped her up in my arms and noticed a piece of paper attached to her. This isn’t over. Was written across it. What in the f**k was that supposed to mean? Anger ripped through me, but I needed to take care of her first. “I have to get her to the clinic. Kyle take that paper to Chase and have him check the cameras,” I growled and turned to head to the clinic, Mason stayed right by my side. The doctor met us at the entrance with a nurse and a stretcher. I laid her gently on it and looked up at the doctor's concerned face. "We just found her like this. I have no idea what happened," I explained quickly. "I'll do what I can," he said with a frown, not sounding very hopeful. They pushed her through the double doors to the back and I ran my hands over my face. “What the f**k was that letter supposed to mean?” I turned to ask Mason as he pulled on a pair of shorts. “Do you think they are already sending you a message?” Mason asked, pacing the room. “No, it’s only been a few hours.” I shook my head. This made no sense. “Do you recognize her?” he asked, pausing his pacing to look at me. “No, but she is so messed up that I don’t know that I would.” I sighed and pushed the front door back open. Mason followed me. Rage boiled inside of me. I wanted to break something. I am so f*****g tired of this bullshit. “How does someone get to my border without being noticed?” I growled. “I think they knew to stay just outside of the territory to avoid the magical boundary around the pack,” Mason answered. “So they tortured an innocent girl to send me some kind of message? What kind of f****d up person does something like that?” I seethed. That poor girl was severely beaten and it looked like she had been for some time. “Maybe someone else is mad about Esme closing the barrier?” Mason suggested. It made the most sense. But any survivors of that war were currently being held in my jail as far as we knew. Though others would come, this seemed different. “Maybe,” I replied, pacing to try to calm down. “Maybe we can get some answers once she wakes up,” Mason said optimistically. “Sir, we have to do emergency surgery. Her wolf is suppressed, and she is bleeding internally.” a nurse walked out and said quickly before stepping back inside, letting the door close behind her. I need her to live. I have questions.
