I closed the door to Rafa’s room slowly. I had taken him to the guest room on the other side of the hall, that way if anything happened, I would hopefully be able to hear it. It only took a couple of hair strokes and the comfy king bed to knock his ass out. I leaned against the door and breathed out slowly. I knew I had to walk downstairs and confront my Dad eventually. I could still smell the boys and Ellis so they must still be here. It was only a little after 12 and I was already ready to just sink into my bed. I pushed myself off the door and walked down the stairs, holding on to the banister for some support. I took a left at the bottom of the stairs and walked towards the large modern oak door and grabbed the silver handle using my other hand to knock.
“Enter”, I heard my father’s throaty voice say.
I pushed the door open and saw Andrew sitting on the grey carpeted floor, in front of Jared who was laying on the black leather couch. My Dad’s office fit with the rest of the house with its modernistic style. He was sitting at his large black glass table, leaning back in his leather chair. Jared sat in front of him on the black square chairs. I took a seat in the matching chair next to him, crisscrossing my legs and putting my elbows on my knees to hold up my head.
“So, what have you all been talking about?”, I asked trying to breaks the tension.
“Andrew was just telling me more details about what happened tonight.”, he took a breath and his hard exterior turned to one of relief as he said, “I’m glad you’re okay Aurora.”
“Yea, I’m fine. I finished healing up Rafael and I suppose you know the others left. They won’t say anything Dad, don’t worry.”
I trusted my friends. They were family after all. He nodded
“I do too. Their good kids.”
“Their mostly older than me Dad.” I laughed since he called them kids.
“Twenties is still young to me. Besides that, we have been waiting for you so we can continue with the conversation. Genesis’s presence is increasing, especially with the Fae coming out to the public. The Marrok suspects there to be a base of operations in North Carolina. The men you encountered today were probably part of a subunit. Untrained white rednecks looking for a score. You believe they weren’t military trained?”, he looked at me.
“No, the first one who came up to me seemed to be the smartest of the bunch but he was a bit crazed. He was buff but not very intelligent and got distracted easily. This all started with our waiter anyhow, when he served me, his bracelet had burned me because it was made of pure silver. He seemed to notice, but I didn’t even think to make a connection between him and Genesis. I even lost track of him in the commotion. It’s a run-down Denny’s they don’t have security cameras either and everyone was too scared to even record. I took all traces of us from there, and did what I could. Like I said, they were untrained to the point they didn’t even use the silver bomb correctly and they panicked when the first guy went down.”
He nodded at my assessment.
“Don’t worry about any evidence. I sent Sabina to clean things up discretely, and Jaxon was the first on the scene he held everything together.”
Sabina was a local Fae who mixed in her natural magic with Voodoo due to her African descent. She helped the pack with matters like this where there shouldn’t be any trace of us. My Father was a friend to her Mother and she saw him as family, and therefore she saw me as a daughter almost. She also owned a Voodoo inspired shop a couple blocks from the main city. Jaxon, was the Chief Detective for Miami-Dade Police department. Sometimes wolves got out of hand and people ended up dead, to put it bluntly. He and a few other cops usually would be able to cover it up, leaving it to cold cases after a while. The families never got closure I suppose, but at least we were safe.
“That’s good. Don’t need anything else to be messed up for the night.”, I said huffing. After tonight, nothing would ever be the same. I would be lucky if my friends ever went with me two blocks down the street again.
“You all should get some rest. It’s been a long night. Your Father should be here any minute Andrew, he will take Jared and yourself home. Thank You again Ellis, its greatly appreciated.”
Ellis stood up and bowed his head.
“Alpha”, and with that he walked out the door back to his car.
I stood up to help with Jared. He grunted in pain as he stood up and put his arm around Andrew to get his footing.
“Thank You Guys, it means a lot to me that you had my back in there.”, I looked at both of them holding their gaze for a moment each so they would know the depth of how much I meant it. They both nodded.
“Anything for you, Kid”, Andrew said tussling my hair. He was only two years older than me but treated me like a little girl.
“This is nothing, so don’t even worry about me.”, Jared said until I nudge his bandages and grimaced in pain.
“Thanks Guys, I owe you one.”
I walked them to the door and held it open for them about to make a quick escape, but my Father knew me all too well.
“Don’t even try it.”
I sighed and closed the door turning back to look at my Father.
“Sit”, he commanded.
I sat in the same chair I had before.
“Dad, I had to. They were going to kill me and probably the others just for sitting with me.”
“Aurora, I’m not disappointed in you for making the right call. I would have done the same thing if I was in your shoes. You put their lives before yours and that’s what any Alpha would do.”, he sighed and continued.
“What I’m concerned about is what you did to those men. According to Andrew, he killed one, but you slit one’s throat with a knife and tore out the others jugular with your claws.”, he raised an eyebrow at me.
“Yes. Jared had been shot and the quack was shooting bullets everywhere, he even hit Rafael at that point!”
“I know. But you could have at least tried to disarm and knock out in the very least. We teach you these things as a means to make it easier on all of us. To make the clean-up and cover up better. Not only this but to show a little bit of restraint, is also a sign of strength. Not even the Marrok goes around executing everyone who pokes him with a stick. You need to show the same restraint, especially in these types of situations. The secret of the Fae is out. That means every Human already suspects that there are other Supernatural creatures out there including the stereotypical Werewolf and Vampire. You know that, the packs know it and so does Bran.”
Bran being the Marrok.
“I know. I’m sorry. I let my feelings get the best of me when I should have thought logically and rationally. I know you get worried for not only myself but for the Pack and I shouldn’t be putting you through this Old Man.”, I lightened the conversation a bit with that comment. He smiled but continued on.
“This Old Man may have to become young again to deal with what may be coming. Bran wants to come out to the Public.”
My jaw dropped.
“I’m sure Rafael appreciates when your mouth is like that but close it before you attract flies to it.”
“Dad!”, I was in even more shock at that comment, even though I knew I came home smelling like s*x a number of times.
He only laughed and said, “I was mated at 17, you’re an old one in that department.”
“Dad…no. Just…no.”
He was a cool dad I must admit, and still held on to some charm that his mid 30’s physic held, but he was wise as century year old wolf should be.
“You still miss mom?”
“Everyday. But, after decades of trying you were born. That was the greatest gift anyone could have given me.”
I smiled.
“Back to the topic at hand. Bran is discussing with us Older wolves the plan of action to be taken in the coming years. If we should be hot on the Fae’s heels or if we should allow for the fuss to calm down first. Nothing is for certain yet but in an ever-evolving world we must learn to evolve as well. I will call him in the morning to inform him of today’s incident and see if there are any new updates on this matter. As for our own pack matters, I will be asking the Alpha in North Carolina for his presence. We need to discuss the matter of Genesis and see what he’s been doing regarding their alleged headquarters.”
“You’re going to start questioning another Alpha? Besides, we don’t need any help we are one of the strongest packs.”
“Although I won’t be questioning his actions, he is a fairly young and new Alpha. The previous Alpha and his Luna were killed by the Marrok remember.” I nodded.
I did. The story had traveled around the country and was the talk of the town last year. The Alpha Jace and his mate Wyona had suffered from a heavy dosage of liquid silver and Wolfsbane from Hunters years before. They had said to have recovered, but the psychological effects of the toxic blend brewed over the years. Eventually, they both finally snapped, and the Marrok was forced to put them down. The execution of both an Alpha and Luna being executed was a rare thing.
“Their son took over and is now Alpha, but I need information on the situation especially for our sake. Their pack is getting stronger by the day. We may have older and more powerful wolves; but he has younger wolves and his territory is larger so more wolves in that sense. A tight alliance with them could be good for us, and we can help them deal with this issue as well.”
He paused.
“Speaking of younger wolves, you may even find your mate there.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Selling me off to another pack just to get rid of me? Jeez Dad, that’s cold.”
“As much as I would love to have you run this pack, destiny may have other plans. I doubt you would make a good Luna anyhow. You were born to lead.”, I could hear the pride in his voice.
I got up to leave.
“As much as I would love to go off with some guy I don’t know, not really, I have things to deal with right now. One of them happens to sleeping in our guest room. I just hope they can forgive me, and we can go back to some sort of normality.”, I sighed grabbing the door handle.
“Give them time. Normal will come back soon enough but you need to let them process. To grieve the reality, they thought they knew and accept the new one. But what do I know? I sent you to school for something didn’t I, Psychology Major?”, he said shrugging his shoulder and turning back to his computer.
“Ugh, being Human doesn’t seem so bad now.”, I said walking out.
As the door shut, I faintly heard him, “You’re more than you know Sweetie”.
I walked up the stairs and went to the guest bedroom. I leaned against the door and listened to Rafa’s breathing, and when I listened harder, I could hear the steady beat of his heart. It calmed me to know that he was okay, and I stood there listening to it for a couple more minutes. Just in case I may never hear it again. Who knows if they will accept me?
I sighed forcing myself away from the door and walked to my room. I closed the door behind me and slowly got into bed pulling the covers over me. As I laid there, I begged my mind to just quiet down. To let all anxiety go and just immerse myself in whatever dream I would have, eventually it worked.
