The Meeting
The next morning, the house felt colder than usual. The smell of coffee filled the kitchen, but Lila could barely taste it. She sat by the window, staring into her cup, thinking about the message from Renee. Meet me tomorrow. You deserve to know everything.
Ethan moved quietly behind her, his voice calm. “You’re up early.”
“I couldn’t sleep,” she said softly.
He nodded, watching her for a moment too long. “Still thinking about yesterday?”
She didn’t answer. He smiled faintly, a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “I told you, I’ll prove everything. We’ll go for a drive later. I just need to make one call first.”
Lila looked at him, trying to read his face. “A drive where?”
“You’ll see,” he said simply, sipping his coffee.
Her stomach tightened. Something about his tone didn’t feel right, but she said nothing. She waited until he went upstairs, then reached for her phone. A new message waited.
Come alone. Please. 3PM. Same place as last night.
Her heart raced. Renee wanted to meet in the same spot where everything had started.
By the time Ethan came back down, she was dressed and calm, pretending nothing was wrong. “I might go out for a bit,” she said. “Just to clear my head.”
He looked at her closely. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”
“Yes,” she replied. “I need some air.”
Ethan smiled again, too easily. “Then take care, love.”
The word love sounded cold, rehearsed. She nodded and left, her hands trembling as she closed the door behind her.
The drive to the edge of town felt endless. Her thoughts raced between fear and hope. Maybe Renee had proof. Maybe she could finally understand what was happening.
When she reached the spot, Renee was already there, leaning against her car. She looked pale and tired, her usual confidence gone.
“Lila,” she said softly, walking toward her. “You came.”
“I almost didn’t,” Lila replied. “After what I saw last night, I don’t know what to believe anymore.”
Renee’s eyes filled with tears. “You saw the messages, didn’t you?”
“Yes. From you.”
Renee shook her head quickly. “That wasn’t me, Lila. I swear. He must have done something. He’s trying to turn you against me.”
Lila frowned. “You expect me to believe that?”
“Listen to me,” Renee said urgently. “I didn’t send those messages. Ethan’s been playing both of us. He made me think you didn’t trust me, and now he’s making you think I betrayed you.”
Lila’s chest tightened. “Why would he do that?”
“Because control is what he needs,” Renee whispered. “He likes to make people doubt themselves. He likes to watch it happen.”
Lila looked away, unsure what to think. “He said you wanted me. That you were jealous.”
Renee’s face went still. “He told you that?”
Lila nodded. “He said you’ve been obsessed with me for years.”
Renee laughed softly, a sound filled with pain. “Maybe I do love you, Lila. I won’t lie about that. But not like that. I loved you because you made me feel like I wasn’t alone. You believed in me. That’s not an obsession.”
Lila swallowed hard. “Then what about the night you confessed? You said you think about me all the time.”
Renee looked down. “Because I was scared for you. I’ve seen what he does when he feels someone slipping away. I thought if I told you how I felt, you’d finally see him for what he is.”
The wind rustled through the trees. Lila said, you make it sound like he’s dangerous.”
Renee stepped closer. “He is.”
Before Lila could reply, the sound of tires crunching on gravel broke through the quiet. Both women turned. A black car was approaching slowly from the road.
Renee’s face went pale. “He’s here.”
Lila’s pulse raced. “No, he said he was making a call. He couldn’t have known”
“Yes, he could,” Renee said. “He always knows.”
Ethan’s car stopped a few feet away. The engine turned off, but he didn’t step out. The tinted window rolled down slightly. His face appeared, calm and composed.
“Lila,” he called. “What are you doing here?”
Lila froze. She wanted to speak but her voice failed.
Ethan opened the car door and stepped out slowly. His expression was unreadable. “I told you we’d talk today. But you didn’t wait.”
Renee moved in front of Lila instinctively. “Stay away from her.”
Ethan laughed under his breath. “That’s brave of you, Renee. Still pretending to be the hero?”
“Stop,” Lila said, her voice shaking. “Just stop both of you.”
Ethan looked at her, his tone softer now. “She’s lying to you, Lila. She’s been trying to break us apart for months. Don’t let her win.”
Renee turned to Lila, desperate. “He’s manipulating you! Look at what he’s doing!”
“Enough,” Ethan said sharply, stepping closer. “You’ve already done enough damage.”
Renee reached for Lila’s hand. “Please, come with me. Let’s go somewhere safe.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “You’re not taking my wife anywhere.”
The tension in the air was unbearable. Lila stood between them, her heart pounding, her mind splitting in two. Both voices pulled her in opposite directions, both sounded convincing, both filled her with fear.
Ethan took another step forward, his tone now cold. “Get in the car, Lila. We’re going home.”
Renee’s grip tightened. “Don’t. If you go with him, you’ll never be free again.”
Lila looked between them, shaking her head. “I don’t know who to believe anymore.”
Ethan’s expression softened just slightly. “Believe your husband. I’m the only one who truly loves you.”
Renee whispered, “He doesn’t love you. He owns you.”
For a long moment, no one moved. Then, before Lila could react, Ethan reached inside his coat and pulled something out.
A small black phone.
He unlocked it, turned the screen toward her, and smiled.
“I told you, Lila,” he said quietly. “I can prove who’s lying.”
On the screen, a video began to play.
Lila gasped. Her knees weakened as she saw herself, Ethan, and Renee together. That night. The one that changed everything.
And Ethan’s voice whispered from the video, cold and cruel.
“Smile for me, both of you.”
The screen went dark.
Lila’s world stopped.
