CHAPTER EIGHT: ALMOST SOMETHING

238 Words
The tension between them didn’t disappear. If anything, it grew. Every shared moment now carried a weight neither Ethan nor Aisha could ignore. A simple touch lingered longer. A casual joke felt more meaningful. Even silence had started to say too much. One evening, after a long day of lectures, they found themselves walking across campus together. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow around them. “You’ve been quiet,” Ethan said. “So have you,” Aisha replied. He smiled slightly. “Fair.” They kept walking until they reached a quiet spot near an empty bench. Without thinking much, they both sat down. “I feel like something’s changed,” Aisha said softly. Ethan looked at her. “It has.” She hesitated. “And you’re just… okay with that?” “Are you?” he asked instead. Aisha didn’t answer immediately. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of her bag as she avoided his gaze. “I don’t want things to get complicated,” she admitted. Ethan nodded slowly. “Me neither.” But the truth was clear in both their eyes. It was already complicated. For a moment, everything around them faded—the noise, the movement, the world itself. It felt like it was just the two of them. And in that quiet space, they sat on the edge of something undefined. Not quite friendship. Not quite love. But dangerously close.
