CHAPTER FOUR: COMFORTABLE SILENCE

240 Words
By the time their project was submitted, something between Ethan and Aisha had shifted in a way neither of them could fully explain. They no longer needed excuses to talk. It started with small things. A quick greeting before lectures. Saving a seat without asking. Sharing notes when one of them missed a class. What once felt unfamiliar slowly became routine. One afternoon, they found themselves back under the same tree where they had first spoken properly. This time, the silence between them felt different—no tension, no awkwardness. Just calm. “You’re unusually quiet today,” Ethan said, glancing at her. Aisha shrugged slightly. “Just thinking.” “About?” She hesitated, then sighed. “Life. School. Everything.” Ethan nodded as if he understood more than she said. For a while, neither of them spoke again. Yet somehow, it didn’t feel empty. Aisha leaned back, closing her eyes briefly. “You know… I don’t usually sit with people like this.” “Like what?” Ethan asked. “Comfortably,” she replied. Ethan smiled faintly. “Maybe you’re just getting used to me.” She opened her eyes and looked at him. “Maybe.” That moment lingered longer than expected. It wasn’t loud or dramatic, but it meant something. Because without realizing it, they had crossed a line—from strangers, to something softer. Something steady. Something that was slowly beginning to feel like home.
