CHAPTER SIX

1226 Words
Forty-Two Floors Up AMARA' S POV I tell myself I'm going back for the counter-proposal. That's the story. Meridian's counter-proposal arrived at eleven PM. Forty pages of legal language that I need to read before Monday. My apartment has thin walls. The penthouse is quiet. This is professional. That's what I tell myself at eleven-fifteen. At eleven-twenty-seven I text him. "Are you awake? Counter-proposal came in. I have questions." He responds in thirty seconds. "Come up." Not where are you. Not it's almost midnight. Come up. Like the door was already open. I put on my coat. * * * DAMIEN' S POV She's at my door at eleven forty-one. Still in her work clothes. Coat thrown over them. The counter-proposal in one hand like a reason. Hair slightly less perfect than it is at the office. She is the best thing I've seen in longer than I want to calculate. "Counter-proposal, she says, holding it up." As if I don't know she texted me at eleven-twenty-seven on a Friday night. "Come in." She comes in. She sets her coat on the chair where my jacket always goes. She opens the file on my kitchen counter. She talks about page thirty-one, the liability cap, what it means if we accept it. I agree with everything she says. Immediately. Because she's right and because agreeing ends the pretense faster. "You're making this difficult, she says." "What am I making difficult?" "Maintaining professional distance. When you just agree with everything." "Your analysis is correct, I say. I don't fight correct things." I come around the counter. She doesn't move back. She tilts her chin up. "I came here for the counter-proposal, she says." "I know." "I need you to know that." "I know that too, I say. And if you want to leave right now and go back to Brooklyn and the professional distance, I will not say another word. Your choice. Entirely." She looks at me. Five days of me keeping my word. Five days of her knowing exactly what I want and choosing, every day, not to ask for it. "Stop being so patient, she says." Something breaks open. My hands cup her face — both of them, slow — and I look at her for one more second to make absolutely certain, and she is looking back with eyes that have already decided, and I kiss her. Not soft. Not tentative. The kiss of a man who has been waiting and has just, with her full permission, stopped. * * * OMNISCIENT'S POV His lips finding hers in a kiss that began softly, a cautious exploration, before intensifying with consuming fervor. It wasn’t merely a kiss; it was a declaration, a mutual surrender. Amara’s hands slipped into his hair, her fingers tangling in it as the outside world disappeared, reduced to that single burning point of contact. Their bodies drew closer, erasing the thin barrier of their clothes. Every touch was heightened, every brush of skin a spark. Damien lifted her with disarming ease, carrying her toward his bedroom. He stop at the bedroom door. "Still not stopping?" "If you ask me that one more time, she says, I'll make a professional decision and go back to Brooklyn." He push the door open. Their clothes fell to the floor in careless disarray, revealing bare skin beneath the dim light. His hands explored her body with meticulous attention, every curve, every hollow, every patch of skin becoming an object of his devotion. He didn’t simply touch her; he seemed intent on understanding her, absorbing her. Amara’s breathing became ragged, low moans escaping her throat as her own hands answered his exploration with equal hunger. He caressed her with sensual patience, every movement deliberate, every touch a promise of heightened pleasure. He watched her, delight written across his face, his eyes never leaving hers, as though he wanted to engrave every nuance of her pleasure into his memory. She responded to his rhythm, her hips rising to meet his, her fingers gripping his shoulders as an intense wave of heat swept over her. The intimacy between them was raw and unfiltered, a profound connection that transcended the physical. Every sigh, every moan, every movement was an integral part of their silent dialogue, a symphony of shared desire. He claimed her with fierce tenderness, and she gave herself to him without reservation, surrendering to the power of their union. Their bodies intertwined, their skin pressed against one another, their breaths mingling in a crescendo of ecstasy. He finds the places that break her composure and stays there until she say his name in a voice that doesn't sound like hers— raw, unguarded, completely his. "Stop being so deliberate, She managed to say." "No", he says against her throat. "This is the one place I refuse to be efficient." He lifts her arm above her head and holds it there, his thumb pressing to her pulse, his eyes on her face while he maps everything She hasn't let anyone close enough to find. She grips the sheets. She arches into him. She stopped thinking about anything except the specific, devastating attention of Damien Voss when he has nowhere else he'd rather be. "Look at me, he says." She open her eyes. He is above Her and close and his face is completely open — the walls gone, the controlled stillness gone, nothing careful left in him at all. She holds his gaze. He moves. She stopped thinking. She falls. She don't even try to land. Their exchange was of rare intensity, a passionate dance in which every gesture carried profound meaning. He watched her, admired her, his gaze filled with sincere admiration for the woman she was and for the pleasure she brought him. She felt seen, desired, and above all, deeply connected to him. The s****l tension that had simmered between them for weeks had finally erupted, consuming them in a blazing fire. When the c****x came, it was a tidal wave, a release of all the restraint they had accumulated. Their bodies trembled, their minds dissolving into a whirlpool of sensations. They remained wrapped in each other’s arms, their hearts beating in unison, the silence that followed their union just as eloquent as the cries that had preceded it. The apartment, a silent witness to their uninhibited passion, seemed to still vibrate with the intensity of what had happened. In his arms, Amara felt protected, desired, and finally, completely herself. The night was young, and their story, far from over, was only beginning. * * * AMARA'S POV After. The city glows through the windows. His hand warm and heavy on my stomach. His breath slow against my hair. I could analyze this. I could build a structure around what just happened and classify it and decide what it means. I don't. For the first time in a very long time, I let something be without turning it into something manageable. "You're thinking, he says." "No, I say." "No?" "For the first time in a very long time." He's quiet. "Good, he says finally. Stay like that." I stay. The counter-proposal is on the kitchen floor. Neither of us mentions it. I don't go back to Brooklyn. I don't want to. That's the thing I've stopped pretending isn't true. * * * End of Chapter Six
