CHAPTER EIGHT

The Name AMARA' S POV I search the name on Saturday afternoon. Harlan. Just that. Then Harlan plus Voss. Then Harlan plus Voss Industries. I sit at my kitchen table in Brooklyn with my laptop and my cold coffee and the brass key on the table beside me, and I search the way I search everything — methodically, completely, following every thread until there are no more threads. The first results are thin. Financial filings. A mention in a 2019 profile of Damien that refers to a former business partner without a name. I refine. Harlan plus Voss plus business partner. A civil filing from 2018. Settled out of court. The opposing firm specializes in one specific category of work. Corporate fraud. I sit back. I look at the key. Then I keep searching. * * * Two hours later I have a name. Harlan Cole. Former business partner. The man Damien built his first company with, before Voss Industries existed. They were together three years. Then something happened — the filing is too redacted to tell the full story, but the shape of it is clear enough. Litigation. Settlement. One of them walked away with everything and one of them walked away with nothing. I already know which one walked away with nothing. Because one of them built a three-billion-dollar empire from scratch afterward, alone, with the specific intensity of someone who had something taken from them and decided it would never happen again. And then I find the part that makes me go very still. Harlan Cole is a silent investor in Meridian Group. Routed through a shell company that took me forty-five minutes to trace. The man on the other side of our deal is the man who betrayed Damien seven years ago. And Damien already knows. He has to know. He knew before he hired me. * * * DAMIEN' S POV She calls at four PM. Not a text. A call. Which means she found something. "Tell me about Harlan Cole." Not a question. Not a request. An instruction, delivered in the specific voice she uses when she has already done the research and is giving me the opportunity to be honest before she tells me what she knows. I close my eyes. "How much did you find?" "Enough. The 2018 filing. The shell company. His stake in Meridian. A pause. You knew before you hired me." "Yes." Silence. "Come up, I say. I'll tell you everything." "I'm already in the elevator." * * * AMARA' S POV He opens the door before I knock. He looks at my face and he doesn't try to manage what he sees there. He just steps back and lets me in and closes the door and stands in the middle of his living room like a man who has already decided to take whatever comes. "Tell me everything, I say. From the beginning." He tells me. All of it. Harlan Cole. Three years of building something together, of thinking they were building it equally, of trusting a man he considered the closest thing to a brother he had. The contract that got amended without his knowledge. The sale that was arranged behind his back, structured to give Harlan sixty percent and Damien nothing. The three days before close when he found it, when he pulled every thread and discovered what had been done while he wasn't looking. The settlement. The dissolution of the company. The decision to start from zero with Voss Industries, from nothing, alone, because he didn't know what else from before was tainted. "That's why, I say. "Something that was entirely mine. That no one could take."" "Yes." "And you knew he was behind Meridian before you hired me." "I found out three weeks before I contacted Hartley." I look at him. "Why didn't you tell me?" He's quiet for a moment. The kind of quiet that means he's deciding how much truth this requires. "Because I needed you on the file before you knew what you were walking into. And because— He stops. Starts again. Because I was afraid that if you knew, you wouldn't come." The room is very quiet. "You withheld material information from your own legal counsel, I say slowly. Because you were afraid I'd say no." "Yes." "Damien. That's—" "Wrong, he says. It was wrong. I'm not going to explain it away. I made the choice and it was wrong." He says it without deflection. Without justification. Just: wrong. I did it. It was wrong. I look at him for a long moment. I think about everything he's told me. The methodical honesty. The key made before I agreed to anything. The way he sat with me in silence when I said I was tired instead of trying to fix it. And now this. One wrong thing. Admitted without excuses. * * * DAMIEN' S POV She is quiet for a long time. I let her be. I have said what there is to say and the rest belongs to her — whether she stays, whether she believes me, whether the trust I've been building for four weeks survives the thing I withheld. I watch her decide. "Harlan is going to come for me, she says finally. Not a question." "Yes." "Because I'm the thing that matters to you." I look at her steadily. "Yes." "And you let me walk into this without knowing." "Yes, I say. And I'm sorry. Not because you found out. Because I should have trusted you with it from the start." She crosses the room. She stops in front of me. She looks up at my face with the expression she has when she's made a decision and is done with the deciding. "I'm not leaving, she says." Something in my chest loosens. "I know Harlan's coming, she continues. I know what he wants to do and I know exactly how he's going to try to do it. And I need you to promise me something." "Anything." "No more handling things I should know about. No more decisions made on my behalf about what I can or can't handle. Full information. From now on." "You have it, I say. Everything. From now on." She nods. She doesn't move away. Neither do I. "Amara." "Don't say something important, she says. I can't hold more important things tonight." I look at her. "I was going to say the view is better with someone in it." She looks at me for a moment. "That's not unimportant." "No, I agree. But it's small enough to hold." She turns to the window. I stand beside her. The city does its indifferent thing below us. We let it. * * * End of Chapter Eight
