Audrey was the first to react. She slapped her thigh and shrieked in a sharp voice.
"Well, would you look at that! Turns out all this time, Margot is the real rich man's wife! This diamond ring must cost a good few million, right?"
The others also came to their senses and crowded around her one after another.
"Margot, you've been hiding this from us this whole time? How could you!"
"Exactly, you're way too low-key. You didn't even tell us your boyfriend is so rich!"
"I knew it! Some people act all high and mighty every day, as if they could ever marry into a wealthy family!"
Georgia snickered, covering her mouth. "So after all this, Daphne, you're the one who's been throwing yourself at a taken man like a homewrecker? Wearing a cheap diamond ring and parading around here like you're some big shot? Give me a break!
"You'd even steal your own best friend's man right out from under her? You're absolutely shameless!"
Waves of vicious remarks came crashing down on me from all sides.
I ignored these two-faced people and walked step by step to stand in front of Wesley.
"Wesley, what does she mean by all this?"
Wesley looked up at me, his eyes full of conflict. "Daphne, let me explain—"
He had barely spoken when Margot cut him off impatiently.
She rested a hand on her still-flat stomach, wearing an arrogant, triumphant smile.
"What's there to explain? Wesley and I got together long before you two did. Besides, I'm already pregnant with his child. It's almost two months along."
She turned her head to look at me, her gaze brimming with contempt. "Daphne, Wesley was just messing around with you before. You didn't actually think he'd go against his parents' wishes to marry a penniless nobody, did you?"
My colleagues gasped in shock again, then burst into even louder jeers and laughter.
"Pregnant? Congratulations, Margot!"
"Now that you're carrying the Beaumont family's kid, your status is solid. You're definitely going to be the young mistress of the Beaumont family, no question about it!"
"Daphne, why don't you get lost already? Are you just going to stand there making a fool of yourself?"
I stood frozen in place, feeling as if all the blood in my body was flowing backward.
Every little memory from the past two years was still vivid in my mind. Yet today, my best friend was standing here with her pregnant belly, telling me they'd been together this whole time.
A sudden wave of nausea rose in my stomach.
I looked at the ring on Margot's hand, then at the one on my own.
It turned out this had all been a premeditated farce.
Wesley pushed through the onlookers, strode over to me, and held my wrist firmly.
Audrey shouted from behind, "Mr. Beaumont, why are you even bothering with this scheming woman!"
Wesley ignored her, leaned in close to me, and said in a low voice, "Daphne, my mom found out Margot is pregnant, and she's threatening to kill herself unless I marry her into the family. I have no feelings for her at all. This was all her plan. I got wasted at that party, and she threw herself at me and climbed into my bed..."
Wesley's eyes turned red, his voice trembling with supplication. "Daphne, wait for me. Once she gives birth to the baby, I'll take the child away, then find an excuse to divorce her. The child will belong to the Beaumont family. I'll give her a sum of money to send her packing. Then I'll come marry you in grand style, okay?"
I stared at the man in front of me, the churning nausea in my stomach finally impossible to hold back.
Cowardly, selfish, and utterly, unforgivably shameless.
He wanted both the Beaumont family fortune and to keep his mother happy, plus the child in Margot's belly, and on top of all that, he expected me to sit around and wait for him like I was some widow left hanging.
I wrenched my hand free from his grip and slapped him hard across the face with my backhand.
Everyone present froze in shock.
Margot let out a shriek and lunged at me, "Daphne Caldwell, are you insane? How dare you hit him!"
I couldn't be bothered to spare this pair of scumbags another glance.
"Wesley, you are completely shameless. You two are a perfect match. b***h meets dog, may you live happily ever after. Don't ever show your face around me again, you make me sick."
With that, I turned and walked to the side of the road, hailing a taxi.
I pulled the door shut, and the car sped off down the road.
