Chapter 4

Her voice had barely faded. Colleagues who'd been straining to listen in on the drama all crowded over to gush about how great she was. "Margot, you're so generous!" "Why even bother comforting someone like that? Just call building security to throw her out!" Margot reveled in the flattery from everyone around her. She unzipped her bag and pulled out a red wedding invitation. It was printed with her and Wesley's photo. She set the invitation gently on my desk. "Daphne, Wesley and I are getting married on the 16th of next month. The Beaumont family has booked the entire Grand Hyatt Hotel downtown." Margot's eyes crinkled with a smile. "Come to our wedding feast, it'll help you get a fresh start! Once you see Wesley and I walk down the aisle happily, you'll be able to let go completely and start a new life, right?" I stopped packing my things, completely unmoved. I picked up the invitation, tore it to pieces in front of everyone, and tossed the scraps into the trash can. "Your so-called good luck is disgusting. I want nothing to do with that." Margot shrieked. "Daphne! Don't be ungrateful! I invited you out of the kindness of my heart, and you dare to tear up my invitation?" The colleagues erupted in chaos. Audrey was the most aggressive, pointing straight at my nose and cursing furiously. "Once a mistress, always a mistress. You'll never be anything but trashy, unfit for polite society! Pack your bags and get out of our company right now!" Just as the argument was spiraling out of control, a familiar voice came from the back of the crowd. "What's going on here?" Everyone turned around to see Wesley approaching. The second Margot saw him, tears burst from her eyes. She threw herself into his arms and sobbed about how I’d bullied her. Wesley held Margot tightly to comfort her. But when he looked at me, his eyes wore that sickening, feigned look of deep affection. "Daphne, we're all colleagues, after all, and you used to be Margot's best friend. Just come to the wedding. Just do it for my sake, okay? You love me so much. You must want to witness my happiness with your own eyes, right?" I stared at the couple and let out a cold laugh. "I don't have time to go to your wedding. Because on the 16th of next month, I'm getting married too." As soon as the words left my mouth, the entire office went dead silent for a second. Then roars of laughter erupted. Georgia laughed so hard tears streamed down her face. "Daphne, are you kidding me? You're gonna make me laugh myself to death! You're getting married? To who? Thin air?" Audrey laughed even harder, doubling over. "What, you gonna pay some random guy off the street last minute to fake a wedding with you? You don't even have a boyfriend, and you think you're actually getting married the same day as our Margot?" I let them mock me, my expression remaining calm the whole time. "Is there some kind of misunderstanding here? I never told any of you that Wesley was my boyfriend. And I never accepted his proposal either." Margot rolled her eyes and let out a scoff. "Daphne, what's the point of acting so high and mighty now? Wesley proposed to you yesterday. You have already taken the ring and worn it on your hand, flaunting it everywhere. Aren't you just throwing yourself at him, begging to marry him?" I held up my right hand and twisted the diamond ring on my ring finger to show it off. "You mean this one? It looks a bit similar, but it really isn't the one Wesley bought. He kept trying to force it on me yesterday, and I couldn't turn him down right then and there. I only pretended to accept it, and threw it into his passenger-side glove compartment right after." Wesley froze. He stared at the ring on my hand, his expression kept shifting. "Then who gave you this ring?" At that moment, a set of steady footsteps sounded from the entrance of the office area. A deep, resonant male voice cut through all the noise and commotion. "I did."
