Gabriel's face was a canvas of barely-contained fury as I sized him up, my stance deliberate, my electric blue eyes sharp and cutting. The sacred lake reflected the faint moonlight between us, but there was nothing serene about this confrontation.
"You really don't see it, do you?" I finally said, my voice low yet striking like a blade. I didn't wait for him to reply. "You played the game, Gabriel. You threw away every chance you had because of your ambition."
