Lyra's POV
I decided to check the bathroom, even though I already knew what I would find.
Nothing.
I was met with the gentle dripping of water from the tap.
I turned around, my heart skipping a beat.
“Kate?” I called her name when I heard footsteps outside the room in the hallway.
I quickly dashed out of the room to the hallway, but I was wrong; it wasn't Kate, it was one of the maids.
"Did you see Kate, a young woman with blue eyes, in the hallway?" I asked.
And she nodded her head dismissively, "No, I haven't."
Then I descended through the stairs, hoping to see her somewhere below.
Maybe she'd gone to the kitchen to get food, or the parlor, or wandered into one of the guest rooms.
But she was not in the living room.
I called out again, louder this time.
“Kate!”
No reply.
