Lila and Alex stumbled into a grove with an ancient stone pedestal. Set on the rocks, twined by briers and lichens, a sparkling sapphire pendant. A course of energy flowed through Lila as she stepped toward the longing, brushing her fingertips along the cold metal.
As she lifted the amulet, the guardian appeared at the far side of that clearing, eyes lit with a rage just below madness. It howled, laying waste to the earth beneath him.
Alex grabbed Lila's arm. "We have to go, now!"
However, before any could act, a figure emerged from the shadows; it was Mrs. Thornfield, the gentle and ancient librarian of the town. There was an unnatural light in her eyes and her lips had pulled themselves into a sinister smile.
Do you think it was that simple? "Time is short," she sneered with contempt. This artifact is more than just a way to remove the curse, it's a ticket to power beyond imagining.
Lila's blood ran cold. " Mistress Thornfield, what do you here? "
I laughed, a harsh laugh that had a haunted echo. For a hundred generations, I have awaited this moment. The prophecy spoke of the chosen one but never said who, in the end, would come, to wield its power.
She called the guardian with a wave of her hand, and it stood by her side obediently. Then, "Now, hand over the amulet, and maybe I won't kill you.
The amulet felt warm in her hand as if its spirit was stirring and growing from something more than metal; she steadied herself and held it close. She looked over to Alex, who nodded in turn; he was on and would be ready for a fight.
But, before she could do anything, the ground again trembled something, followed by dark clouds above them. Then, a c***k in the sky opened up and sent a beam of light down that surrounded Lila in shining radiance.
The world started to blur as the beam of light enveloped Lila. Warm power swirled like liquid fire in her blood and lifted her. The amulet seated in her hand thrummed with a potent, timeless magic that rang through the core of her being. She hung there for a while, stuck in the weave of here and now and a memory from many years ago.
Her mind conjured a great, ageless forest of towering trees and dancing streams. A druid stood in a clearing, his face was aged with wisdom and sorrow. His words were in another language - a tongue she could not wrap her ears around - but they indicated the artifact was to guard and not to kill.
Suddenly, the vision shifted. What she saw was Moonlit Hollow in all its glory — a town rich with life and light. But then the darkness came, and she witnessed the curse which turned people into werewolves and caused devastation throughout the land. He sealed his powers in the amulet. His only wish was to break his curse someday.
The light around Lila dimmed, and she opened her eyes to see that she was back in the glade, the amulet still gripped tightly in one hand. The guardian was rooted in place now, its eyes no longer attacking but observing... watching. But Mrs. Thornfield was anything but inert.
"Give it to me!" I AM NOT LYING!! She screamed, her face contorted with anger. With a cry, she threw up her arms and black veins of magic raced towards Lila.
Just before the vines reached her, Alex jumped at Mrs. Thornfield, claws outstretched. He pushed her so that she stumbled and the dark magic streaked into the air. Lila just glowed more from the amulet and felt an overwhelming determination.
You don't get it, echoed the voice of Lila. Power: This power is not intended to emit you
Mrs. Thornfield growled, shoving Alex to get her bearings back in order. "You naive child! Do you think you can control it? It will take you as it took. Eventually, the curse will eat you alive.
Lila looked over to the Guardian and stood still, watching her every move. It was not just a beast, however, she understood now that it was a guardian, tied to the magic of the amulet. She raised the amulet with new clarity, and the guardian took a step back, its expression almost reverent.
"Stop!" She even heard Mrs Thornfield scream, and then a hollow, almost resigned glance of panic appeared in response. Justifying the answer as? What would a woman know about this?
Lila ignored her. Closing her eyes, she concentrated on the potential in the amulet. The druid was there, she sensed it, leading her, teaching her how to wield the magic. Her voice mingled with the druid's as she chanted an ancient incantation, almost like a whisper.
Yet the earth shook again, not from the fury of the guardian. The trees around the treeless garden became luminous, and branched together to create a shelter canopy. The light grew brighter and a wave of pure energy surged all over the forest, taking it to town.
Lila opened her eyes and the glowing amulet dimmed. She wished she would feel relieved like a big burden had been lifted just now. The curse was breaking.
But Mrs. Thornfield had another idea. One last, feral yell echoed out, and she lurched at Lila again - with her hands charged full of darkness. Alex attempted to stop her, but the librarian was too powerful.
Mrs Thornfield swayed toward his attack, and at the last possible moment, her guardian moved. It caught the explosion, absorbing all the dark magic in it. The monster bellowed in agony, but its gaze didn't stray from Lila. Lila understood at that moment: the guardian was sacrificing itself to save her and the amulet.
At this Mrs Thornfield took a hasty step back, her expression an equal measure of disbelief. "No! This can't be happening!"
The relic wobbled and raised the last of its power to Mrs. Thornfield. It made a final, defiant roar and lunged at her with its powerful jaws hanging. A light brighter than the first, and then everything was gone...only silence and the scent of witchcraft remained.
She wheeled and fell to her knees, the amulet tumbling from her hands. Alex came over to her, looking worried. "Are you okay?"
She nodded feebly, drained from the battle, and weak from using the power of the amulet. "I think so. The curse... it's breaking. I can feel it. ”
Alex helped her to her feet, and they stood in the glade, surrounded by the aftermath of the battle. The trees that had formed the protective dome were returning to their normal state, and the glow was fading.
But as they began to leave the glade, a chilling voice echoed through the forest. "This isn't over, Lila. The artifact is only the beginning."
Lila turned, her eyes wide with shock. Emerging from the shadows was Mr. Hawthorne, his eyes now burning with an even more intense, malevolent light. "The curse is deeper than you know, and you have only scratched the surface."
