Chapter 1
Elena’s POV
I stared at my phone screen, my thumb hovering over the last message like touching it would make it worse. My heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would rip through my chest. My throat was dry, my breath shaky.
Another message, another threat.
You won’t be breathing for much longer, princess. Enjoy your last days.
My stomach twisted, and bile rose in my throat. My hands trembled as I set the phone down on my desk like it was something toxic. I didn’t want to see it, but closing my eyes didn’t make the words disappear. They were burned into my mind.
For the last three weeks, someone had been sending me messages. At first, I told myself it was a stupid prank. Someone trying to get under my skin because they were jealous or hated my family name. My father was one of the biggest tech moguls in the country. People hated him for his success. By extension, they hated me too.
But now...
The messages had gotten worse, more specific. The last one had mentioned the color of my dress from yesterday and what time I'd left the gala. Whoever this was, they weren't guessing anymore. They were watching me.
I felt a chill run down my spine as I looked around my office, like maybe someone was standing right outside the window, staring at me through the glass.
My father didn’t even let me argue this time. As soon as he saw the message, he made one call.
“You’re getting a bodyguard,” he’d said last night in that tone that meant there was no point arguing.
And now, less than twelve hours later, I was waiting in his office to meet this man I’d never seen before.
The heavy door opened behind me.
I turned quickly, my breath catching without my permission.
The man who walked in was... not what I expected.
I thought bodyguards were supposed to be bulky, like human walls with necks as wide as their heads. This man was leaner, his body cut with muscle but not overdone. He moved with quiet precision, like every step was measured. His black shirt stretched over his shoulders, tucked into dark cargo pants that looked both casual and professional at the same time.
His hair was dark and cropped close, his jaw sharp with a light stubble that made him look dangerous. His eyes... God, his eyes were a cold, stormy gray. When they met mine, my chest tightened like someone had gripped me from the inside.
He wasn’t just dangerous, he was controlled. My mouth went dry, something ran between my legs immediately.
“Elena,” my father said from behind his desk, pulling my attention. “This is Dante.”
The man nodded once, not smiling, not greeting, just a sharp nod that somehow made me feel like I was the intruder here.
“He’ll be in charge of your safety,” my father continued. “Starting now. Whatever he says, you listen. No arguments.”
I crossed my arms, trying to hide how unsteady I felt. “I don’t need a babysitter.”
Dante’s eyes flicked to me, but he didn’t say a word. His expression didn’t change. It was infuriating.
My father let out a heavy breath. “This isn’t a game, Elena. Someone has been tracking you. The police are involved, but until we know who it is, I’m not taking any chances. Dante has experience. He’s handled situations like this before.”
I didn’t look at my father. I couldn’t stop staring at Dante. He wasn’t like the security guys who usually guarded my father’s events. Those men were easy to read, easy to manipulate with a smile or a few kind words.
Dante looked unshakable, sexy and hot, oh my f*****g gawd.
I hated that my pulse sped up just from standing this close to him.
“So what?” I finally said, tilting my head. “You’re going to follow me around all day? Watch me sleep? Listen outside my bathroom door?”
His gaze stayed on mine, steady and unreadable. “I’ll do whatever is necessary to keep you alive.”
The way he said it made my breath hitch, his voice is so damn sexy, I bit my lips, trying to hold whatever is wrong with me.
My father stood. “I need to take a call. Dante will go over the plan with you.” He left the room without giving me a chance to protest.
The door clicked shut, leaving me alone with this stranger.
The silence stretched.
I tried to stand tall, but my legs felt shaky. My palms were sweating, and I hated that he could probably see it.
“Do you always stare like that?” I asked, my tone sharper than I intended.
“Do you always talk when you’re nervous?” he replied, his voice calm and deep.
Heat rushed to my cheeks. “I’m not nervous.”
He didn’t respond. Just looked at me with that same steady gaze, like he could see straight through me.
I hated it. And I hated that it thrilled me.
My stomach twisted, not just from fear, but from something I didn’t want to name.
“Here are the rules,” Dante said finally, his voice cutting through my thoughts. “You don’t go anywhere alone. Not to the store, not to meet friends, not even to the end of the driveway. If I say move, you move. If I say stay down, you stay down. No questions. No hesitation.”
My mouth opened, ready to argue, but he raised a hand slightly.
“If you can’t follow orders, you’ll make my job harder. You’ll also get yourself killed.”
The bluntness of his words slammed into me like ice water. My throat tightened, and I couldn’t come up with a single smart reply.
He stepped closer, and I found myself stepping back instinctively, my back brushing against the edge of my father’s desk.
Dante’s eyes dropped briefly to the space between us, then back to my face. “Understand?”
I swallowed hard, nodding before I even realized I’d moved.
His gaze lingered for a moment, then he stepped back. The distance didn’t make it easier to breathe.
“Good,” he said. “We leave in ten minutes. Pack light.”
“Leave? Where are we going?”
“A safe house. Your father’s estate is too exposed.”
I blinked. “So I just… leave my life behind?”
“For now.” His tone didn’t soften. “You’ll be safer there.”
My heart pounded with anger and fear. My whole world was here. My friends, my work, my routines. And this man expected me to walk away like it was nothing, and not only that, I will be alone with him, alone with him!?
“Let’s go,” his voice dripped with sexiness again, and I found myself gulping down nothing
Oh my f*****g God.
